3.4 swap not starting.

Ok, I'm swapping in an 99 3.4/manual trans into my 85 22R/manual trans truck using the ORS wiring harness and have hit a little bump. I've got power to everything I knew to check, but the starter doesn't appear to be getting any power. I believe I may be missing a wire on the starter that came with the engine perhaps..i've got a large wire that goes to the pos side of the battery and then a wire that has a plug and is from the engine harness.

After reading this thread:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...tarter-194026/

I think this is what I need to do, but I didn't quite follow it 100%. I don't have a "starter" wire on my ORS harness, I assume because I am swapping in a manual to a manual. Any tips?

When I turn the key I get power to the dash, lights, etc. When I turn the key to the "start" position, I can hear the starter rely click and that's all that I get. It doesn't even turn over. Kinda like how my 88 auto wouldnt turn over when I swapped in a manual transmission and did the spliced the wrong wire on neutral safety switch.

I don't have all my other wires hooked up, like my gauges and speed sensor/brake wire- but those shouldn't be necessary yet.

Anyway, I'm learning more and more (very slowly) and would appreciate any tips. Or.. at least point me in the right direction so I can find out/learn on my own.

Thanks,

Chuck

I ran a new wire from the starter relay on the pass side of the engine bay to the starter.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

I hope the attachment is big enough, but the starter replay is on the pass. side behind the fuse box, correct? It's about the size of a match box?

Sorry, i didnt pay attention to what you were putting it in. My truck is a 92 and the starter relay was in the fuse block on the passenger side. I dont know the location on your 85

Nope, no wire for the starter. The engine harness (I thought) would cover that because it has a plug for the starter. I don't suppose you know where that was supposed to go to on the ORS? I bought the harness because aside from being an idiot, i have a hard time with wiring diagrams.

If I am remembering correctly i had the following wires: ign on/start, tac/odo/oil, speed senor/brake switch, a lead to the battery for OBOII/EFI/IGN with fuses, a large plug for the engine harness, the OBOII scan stuf, four relays-STA, FP1, FP2, and one other, and then a fuse for the STA.. but no lead to the starter...now, that being said I very easily could be forgetting something because I am not at my shop. Again, this is for an 22R (not RE) equipped vehicle if that makes any difference.

I figured out that my starter needed that "starter" wire so I pulled out my tester and wired one up from the relay. Works like a charm now.

Scratch that. I took the starter off, wired it up and it worked and then reinstalled it and now its not turning over. At all. Still sounds like my relay is clicking and that's it. Ideas?
