CA Smog: Good News

Good News!
My only concern I had while doing the swap was whether or not the smog ref was going to OK the crossover and exhaust dump on the driver side (as opposed the the passenger, like the 3.4s come stock). I talked to the smog ref, and he said it is fine as long as all the components are in their relative positions (i.e. distance between cats, 02 sensors). Also, the exhaust requires TWO catalytic converters if you're in Cali, and two 02 sensors, at least mine does (2001 model Tacoma engine). Aftermarket cats are also OK. I talked to him about these things specifically and said they were fine. Also, on CARB's website there is a list of aftermarket parts accepted. I will be using Magnaflow cats, part numbers 444005 and 441005, Exec order number D-193-96
Turns out the exhaust wont be as bad as I thought it would be

Other stuff required for smog:
-I have a CA engine and ECU (i think is required, not sure but wanted to be safe)
-All components from 3.4 smog:
--EVAP BOX
--Factory Air Box (or CARB approved intake)
--two 02 sensors
--all sensors to work
--check engine light must work
-lots more that I don't have listed

**I have not gotten the rig smogged yet, however I felt this information may be useful so I wanted to post it. As far as I know this information is correct and will get your rig smogged in Cali (along with some in depth research). If anything changes I will edit. Will also update when completely finished with the referee process

I have been talking to John Balthazar, the head referee in the Sacramento Area, based out of ARC. He has been a huge help and will answer any questions you have. The number to call if you need to speak with a referee is 1-800- 622-7733. CARB website: arb.ca.gov

UPDATE! Over 50k miles since I swapped in the 3.4 (which had 130k at the time) and she is running like a champ!

Just this last weekend I replaced the spark plugs, gave her some fresh oil, replaced the PCV valve, cleaned the MAF and TB, and treated the fuel lines.
God I love how smooth she idles now.... And there's some pretty good pull between the 3 and 5 thousand rpm range.

Man reading all this makes my head spin! I just bought my 94 a month or so ago and I'm pretty happy with it, however, I took her camping and going up the hill on the 80 near emigrant gap (you're from the area you should know) she was struggling to make it. Good side to that is the girlfriend is actually on board with doing the swap (crazy right!). After looking for a good amount of time finally stumbled upon your thread with an amazing write up with pictures but now I'm not so confident in my skills. I've worked in the tuner world and on my DSM a great deal but man this... I guess my question(s) would be what where your major snags during this swap? I don't mind getting my hands dirty but after reading your thread I almost rather would sell the 2nd Gen and just get a 3rd Gen.

For anyone still stumbling upon this thread: over the past few months I have replaced spark plugs, wires, 02 sensors, and the fuel filter, and this thing is still running great. Here is a link that should help anyone with California smog issues:

October 2022 update: Running better than ever!

Sooo the truck was running a bit rough this summer and finally threw a check engine light which was due to the knock sensors. This turned into a deep dive project (as they all do) and I ended up, in addition to the knock sensors, replacing the fuel injectors, detailing the entire engine bay, and painting the valve covers and plenum. In Spring of 2021 I replaced the O2 sensors, plugs, wires, and fuel filter, so with the new replacements, the truck is running GREAT. Honestly the best it has ever run.

And just look how beautiful the bay is now!
