I just finished my swap on a 94 but mine was a 3.0. I found my motor for a grand and spent another 750 bucks on the ORS harness. But if you think you can wire it all up go for it. I knew I couldn't. But that's just me lol. The money can also depend on what year your donor is from. With the odds and ends with the oil dipstick tubes and all that. If you're looking to do it as cheap as you can you might wanna find a 3.4 out of a t100. There's not much difference but it is the easiest. Just finding one is the hard part. But so far I've got about 3 grand in mine with headers rebuild kit and the harness.

Yours being a 22re you would need to modify where you're motor mounts are and use the 3.0's. Maybe a lot more stuff I just know a little about it. Go to Offroad solutions website and they have a ton of information on it. Or browse through the 3.4 swap section

Check out my 3.4 swap thread (in my signature, orange link). I went from a 22R-E to 3.4.

Total cost was probably around $2000. I bought the 1996 4Runner complete minus the transmission, and that helped a lot with spare nuts and bolts, wiring, connectors, and other miscellaneous parts I would have had to buy. A few purchases were tools I didn't have already, like a hoist and engine stand.

It will take some time, but completely do-able with a decent garage and the right tools.
