I have a 1994 Toyta truck 2WD 5spd. I bought a 1994 SR5 gauge cluster from a wreck 4WD. Everything works expect for the TACH. I read in other threads of "jumping a wire" from coil to back of gauge older (2?)gen trucks. Does this work for a 1994 Toyota truck? If so, how do you do this? I dont have a clue. How do I check to see if the tach is bad??

I've been doing some reading online and in my FSM. It looks like you tap into the black wire coming off the ignitor. This should be the IG- wire. I also have a connector beside the data port under the hood that is labeled IG-. According to my FSM the wire then connects to B7 which plugs into the back of the cluster. B is the blue connector. The #1 spot should be on the far left(smaller side of the connector). Just count over 7 spots and you have the B7 location.

Keep in mind this is a FSM for a 93 truck 4x4. If anyone could confirm this info it would help both of us. I am pretty sure this is correct but don't really want to start connecting random wires together.

I know what your doing, it looks pretty cool when finished but can be a tough job. Here is a link to someone who did something similar.

I liked the newer look of the cluster but didn't want to change the entire dash so I went to ebay purchased replacement color plates that toggle blue or green at night and look white in the day and also a brushed aluminum cluster guard. Here is a picture of my cluster.

I got a little impatient waiting for an answer and went ahead and tried hooking the wire how I explained. It worked for me but my tach still jumps to 3000 when I click the key one time. I think I'm going to take the cover off the gauges and plug it into the truck. I'll pull the tach needle and click the key on. This will rotate the gauge and then I can install the needle. Basically zeroing it out.

I went back to the junkyard and pulled another gauge cluster. Im goling to see what this one does. Im hoping my tach will come to life!! If not I will try hooking it up..

Thought i would leave this here for a new update just in case someone was looking to do this, Switched out my old Cluster and put in Sr5 one with New Halo Style Illumiglo faces.

That's the connector under the hood… Near the fuse box IIRC. It's labeled inside the lid, but if that label is gone, it's the single pin in the upper right corner in the picture, IG-.

Run a wire from there to the appropriate signal spot on the back of the cluster to check if the tach works.


Yours isn't going to look exactly like this, but look for the 3 mounting screws behind the tach. One will be labeled IG-… you can either attach the wire to the screw (Again just for testing purposes), or trace the circuit board back to the correct pin in the main connector.
