I don't have a writeup yet but I did my swap with a 3.4 from a 98 2wd 4runner. I used a 97 Manual 4x4 computer to put into my 91 manual V6 4x4 truck. ORS did the harness but the rest was from help from this site. Still doing some final tweaks but so far so good!

I have just (well almost) completed this swap myself. I am running a 97 auto ecm/harness in a 93 manual. So far eveything is running fine. I will know more this weekend once I have finish wiring in my OBD2 plug and checked for codes. However, codes for the ecm looking for the auto trans. does not concern me as much as it will you with you being in CA, emissions aren't as tough on the east coast.
I am currently cleaning up my wiring layout (it is in an excel file) and as soon as I have proven everything out, I would be glad to share if it will help.

ok I now know mostly everything I need for this swap, I just have 2 more questions:

1. is the crossmember for the auto tranny the same as the manual tranny?

2. I read somewhere that I need to take my flywheel out of my auto tranny and put it in the new 5 speed. I dont know why I would need to do this but is this true?

Look here. I dont think so and Slater documents various part pretty well. I had to use the manual crossmember and weld a piece on it to mount the mount if that makes sense. Basically extend the crossmember's mounting surface forward about 3-4 inches.

For the life of me I cant understand this at all. An auto uses a flexplate and a manual a flywheel. You should need nothing from the auto. I have read that they use different length bolts so you may want to grab a set from Toyota for a manual vehicle if you dont have them from a manual
Post your results as to trouble codes!!

Thank you so much dntsdad that thread has loads of info that will help me. I emailed a guy that has done this before and I'm just waiting for him to reply back. As of right now, the only thing I have for the swap is the manual tranny and t case. Everything else I need to track down and buy. So It may be a while before I have everything I need to finish this. Money is also tight at the moment, so I may have to wait for a few more paychecks to come in to be able to get everything. But I shall keep you posted and hopefully before long I'll be grabbin gears in my 5 speed

Sorry for the delay on the results of the codes, but it has been really busy since last week and I haven't been able to get back to the 4Runner. Hopefully I will have some results soon and I will post them up then.

I put the 3.4 and 5 speed trans from a 96 4runner in my 92 4runner that had a auto trany. But mine was quite easy because the motor and trany were already paired from the 96 with the ECM. But you do have to make a bracket for the trany mount to extend it forward. I also used a marlin crawled adapter plate with a gear driven t-case from a 4 cyl. pickup, but drive lines and everything went right in.

There is probably a better place to post this question since it sounds like you are only looking to swap the tranny, not the engine. See my thread here:

as I think it is more along the lines of what you are looking for.
