Hey guys,
I have a 90 SR5 pickup with a newly rebuilt 3.0 that made a horrible whacking sound. We pulled the oil pan and it turns out the crank broke. The dilemma is is it worth dopping 250 bucks into it to put a new crank and bearings in it or put in the complete running 3.4 out of a T-100 that i already have?

I need to get it running soon for school and I dont have too much income right now. So what would you guys do?

I know that you must use the computer from the T100/3.4. Will that work in your 90?

 

Yeah i have the ecm from the T-100 and its an auto trans. But I'm gonna use a manual trans and I'm not sure if that would be a problem?

 

You can repin your auto harness to work with your manual. "dntsdad" has a detailed writeup here about halfway down the page. Since you have the complete doner I would stronly consider the swap. It would make it a low cost and quick swap. but I wouldn't tear up a good T100 just for the swap, unless it's already junked up.

edit: I see you've already cut your body plug, so it looks like you've got your mind made up

 

Wow! That's a first!!! NEVER heard of a 3VZ-E snapping a crankshaft before.

What I'd do is fix it. But that's just how I roll...because I <3 my 3VZ-E...and I don't have a spare 5VZ-FE layin' around.

BTW, who did that rebuild? If you don't mind me askin'...

 

Yeah i was gonna attempt it but i backed away at first, wiring has me nervous I don't want to fry anything. I'm confused on the auto tranny harness off the motor if I'm doing a 5 speed do i just cut it off?

 

You can repin your auto harness to work with it if the plugs match up. Any reason you don't want to swap in the T100 auto tranny? It'd take the hassle out of getting a new ECU and repinning the harness.

 

The T100 tranny is a column shift unlike the Tacomas an 4runners. I got the tranny too but I'm not sure if you can convert them to floor shift?

 

You need to keep reading on here. It has all your answers. The auto 3.4 comp will work with your 5 speed. Fix the 3.0 later to sell.

 

To answer your question, with school coming up ect...

If $250 is all there is to fixing the 3.0, I would go with that. Swapping to the 3.4 can be very costly and time consuming.

I mean, if your window shatters, do you honestly say, should I spend $70 on a new window or should I just get a new door with a window in it?

Being pressed for time, fix the 3.0 and keep reading about 3.4 swaps until it breaks again or whenever time/money allow for it. Read everything you can about wiring; it is rather vital to the swap. I don't think it was mentioned, but isn't the T100 t-case driver's-side drop and the truck/4Runner passenger-side drop? If so, that's another thing to swap or buy an adaptor for; and those run about $3-400... I need one to run geared cases behind the R150 going into my 84 POS. One step at a time...

So yeah, my vote is to fix the freshly rebuilt engine; maybe go raise hell at wherever rebuilt it. Seriously, a broke crank? WTF? I can see a spun bearing, maybe a bent rod... but a crank? C'mon...

 

I took the crank into the local toyota dealership an they want over a grand for one but it looks like they might replace it from a defect in the metal so that'll be nice.

 

So everyone's dying to know... who rebuilt the engine? I bet we're hoping you can raise hell about the crank and get a second rebuild for free; or heavily discounted.

A quick check at rockauto.com shows re-man'd cranks go for about $300 give or take... it's no surprise OEM stuff is oodles of money, but $1000? Was that just the crank or with installation? I could see a grand for and to install, but a grand for a stock crank... nah. Hell, a forged Eagle crank from Summit is about $550! Forged 4340 steel, not cast stock stuff.

 

I don't know who rebuilt the engine nor do I have any paperwork on it because I had the intentions on just pulling the 3.0 out and swapping in a 3.4.

But I tell ya the Toyota mechanics were pretty shocked when I brought the crank in in two pieces. I was told it was 1050 for just the crank. But those guys are gonna try their best to get me a new one under warranty.

No not yet. Kinda dissapointed with Toyota... A guy at the local dealership has been calling people but he can't get ahold of anyone of importance. I think I'm going to just order a crank so I can this thing rollin.

 

3.4 swap has begun! No more screwin with the 3.slow. Almost got the wiring figured out, now I just need to find a fuel line and make the crossover exhaust and I'll be ready to drop it in.

 

Well I built my crossover exhaust today out of the factory exhaust manifold using one of the threads on here about how to do it. I also replaced all the belts and am now waiting on a fuel line to come in.

But man does the wiring suck, I think I get it all figured out and squared away and then I get unsure and don't move ahead any further....

 

You can reuse you stock 3.0 fuel line.
