Switching to Amsoil

Is there any special thing I should do (like flushing the diffs with synthetic oil I'm going to use) prior to putting the synthetic oil in? My diffs are still on dino oil and I'm planning to switch to Amsoil synthetics in a couple of weeks. Should I just drain the dino oil and pour in the Amsoil? TIA.

No need to flush the diffs. I had a can put in the engine that loosens up sludge a few years back when I switched to Amsoil, but no need for the diffs.

I do have a tip though. Before you drain the diffs, make sure you can get the top fill plug off.
Nothing worse than draining out all your diff fluid, then stripping the threads on the fill plug which is up on top or the sides.

Strip that baby, and your stuck with drained diffs.

I would make sure the diff oils were warm first, and then let them drain for a while. Then I would fill with Amsoil. This should be sufficient.

If you wanted to, you could put 1/2 quart into each diff and run it SLOWLY while on jack stands to kind of rinse out the dino. I wouldn't let the speedo go over 5 mph doing this rinse.

Thanks a lot guys for the replies. I'm definitely switching to Amsoil as soon as I received them from the mail. I'm trying to do all the basic maintenance now since I'm going for a six month deployment next month (in the Navy). The missus will be driving my rig so hopefully there won't be any problems while I'm gone.

I clicked on the "Who's On" link after the post, and saw you replying.

Good point about having the old diff fluid warm too.
Now go DL that bikini vid. Your wife may get a kick out of it too.

You aren't necessarilly stuck with no oil in the diff. You can still put a pre measured ammount of oil in through the breather opening which is much easier to open. Guess how I know?

What about the transfer case? The same as the diffs not having to flush it out? And I feel stupid but where are the fill & drain plugs on the transfer case?
