It had to happen. My Toyota steering gear was getting way too loose. I replaced it with a used 4runner steering gear with 135K miles and costing $150.. After a few months it was getting sloppy.

This time I choose Meridian remanufactured steering gear. It cost me $285 plus a $150 core charge.
It was inexpensive compared to $400-600 for remanufactured and $2,000 for a new one.


Meridian is out of San Diego, CA. They are reasonable and provide good customer service.

If you have had other experiences with other folks selling steering gears for Yota’s I would like to hear from you.

I hate to be the one to ask this...almost (maybe it'll save you some money down the road)...but were you unable to adjust it?

how many miles were on the original? i can see how buying a straight used on thats not been used but thumped around a shelf could give out prematurely.

 

I had 123,400 miles on the orginal steering gear. Which equates to 4,000 miles 4x4 outside of Bend, Oregon, 2,000 miles of NW Oregon log roads, 500 miles on Oregon and Washington beaches, about a dozen righteous jumps off of woopie do's, 7,000 miles towing 2,500 pound trailer and around 44,900 miles of highway/city driving. The first 65,000 were used by the first owner
