Question Rear Diferential/ drivetrain

Is there a way to adjust the rotational play or slop in the rear drive train? I seem to have a fair amount, when I park on a hill I roll a few inches before the gear catches.

Hey swerks,

I don't know if you can adjust that, but I would recommend always using the parking brake to help you stay stopped versus only your tranny. I don't think it's good for the tranny to be stopping the rolling truck; I believe it will reduce the life of it.

Just my opinion for you.

Drivetrain play has nothing to do with it. Twisting the driveshaft back and forth, and visually seeing the play is not a good judge of the true backlash of the ring and pinion. ( Im assuming thats what your looking at )

In a Automatic transmission, when you put the vehicle in park, you engage a lock on the transmission. There is no adjustment. It is what it is.

For a manual, use of the parking break in combonation with putting the vehicle in 1st gear yeild the safest means to park.

Adjusting your brakes every 7500 miles is recommended. Maybe that will help.

Jay, are you saying this is normal and I need to learn to live with it. I was thinking that this play, might be the cause of some probs I have with a clunking sound I get at about 30-50mph when I let off the gas completely.
