Pinion Seal leaking?

I've got a leak coming from somewhere on my rear end...I think it might be leaking out of a pinion seal as its leaking onto my driveshaft and throwing gear oil everywhere on the underside of my truck. Is that what is leaking or what else could it be? Thanks guys

Is it coming from the axle area or the transmission area? I will assume the axle, in which case it probably is the pinion seal.

most likely the pinion seal due to a bad breather.... i replaced my diff breather and extended it per the writeup at www.4crawler.com and it has not leaked since....

pinion seal easy fix. if memory serves me right it takes a 32mm socket. a 1/2" impact gun sould zip the nut right off. if you dont have one then you could try pulling the ebrake and then trying the nut. its tight some where around 200 foot pounds.

30mm socket. You need to unstake the nut, and take note of where it was tightened down to so you can replace it to the same position to avoid changing the pre-load on the pinion bearings. Restake the nut after putting it all back together.

Or about $50 at a good gear shop.
