I've got an 87 runner and i am in the process of looking for a set of off-road lights. I was looking at a set of KC daylighters and just wanted a second opinon or to know what works good for you guys.

I think it is hard to beat Hella lights for the price. I just put on some Hella 500 fogs with clear stone shields and an OEM switch for less than $100 a pair. Hard to beat for the amount of light you get.

 

Get the pro comp 130's. They are incredilby bright, and they are relitively cheap. I got mine for $35 each light and $15 for the wiring harness which came to a total of $85.

 

I have both Hellas and KCs. The Hellas are 550 amber fogs, great for that purpose and for giving a little broader coverage without blinding everyone.

The KCs throw as much light as advertised, but I didn't care for the default pencil beam, although I could light up a caribou crossing the highway from a mile off. I swapped the lenses for their 100W floods and have been happy ever since. Coupled with the high beams they give me enough distance and spread to see whatever might hop off the shoulder in time enough not to hit it. Off road, the flood beam also gives better operating light imo.

Keep in mind we have no wattage restriction here for on road use.

 

I'm happy with my Hella 500's. You can get em off Ebay for like $65 with a wiring harness. Get an OEM switch though

My Money is on the Lightforce 240 or 240Blitz HID. They also have the 170. The cool thing is you can get filters for them depending on what type of light / condition you are in, as well as they are beam adjustable like a Magna Lite flashlite. this allows wide angle, or pencil beam, on either light. They are light, and virtually industructable.

Yeup, I agree with himileage27... I'd never heard of LightForce before I went on a ride with Ducky and Jowie (members here) and I really fell in love with the concept of the adjustable focus.

Im using KC's. Their not lying when they say Daylighters. There extremely bright, the beam is more for distance than broad fov. Nice lights, ive never tried anything else, but i think its what u need them for, driving in fog or whatever, hellas, piaa, or what have you. I think i got my kc's for about $100 with everything. The only objection i say is that their 5 3/4in deep, around that. a lil big.

 

I have some driving lights on the bumper...what do you suggest for fog because i'm running into that alot lately.

 

Mount fog lights as low as you can, in a protected area if you do any offroading, and keep them back from the nose of the truck in the event of a fender bender. My money is on the PIAA fogs if your'e talking street fog, but they are very spendy. If you are talking trail fog?, then I would go back to the smaller lightforce and consider the same mounting locations. Note lightforce makes filters for different circumstances, and also offer a remote pointer from within the cab!

If you're looking for all in one, KC makes a number of series of lights that have interchangable lenses. They come with one set of each- amber fog
clear fog/sleet
clear driving

I've installed probably fifty sets over the years and customers seem to be happy with them. Sure, they're not daylighters, but if it's more trail use that miles of open space, you'll probably like them. Also, KC has a 23yr burnout and rustout warranty, just don't lose the reciept!

 

I have a pair of 150W KC Daylighters and they live up to their name. Their warranty kicks butt too. I used to own a pair of their foglights and cracked the lenses and burned out the bulbs several times and they replaced them w/o any questions. I didn't even have the reciept for 'em.

 

Hm,. Those Lightforce sound pretty intresting, Does anyone have a pic with them mounted? If so please post.

i got a set of KC daylighters, very bright and thorogh with instructions but needed to give a little more wire. They only gave enough wire to mount them on your bumper i had to buy more to mount them on my safari rack. But overall i am pleased with them and i got an extra set of light covers for free.

 

Here's a piece of trivia for you: KC has a warranty of 23yrs, but the bulb life is only rated at 30hrs. The reason why they do it is that most people (let's face it) only use them for show and that the majority of people lose their reciept. At our shop, you need your reciept for warranty. So if you had them replaced with none, kudo's to you!
