Looks like the P.O. painted over the frame etc to hide all the crappy rust that was all over the truck...! So, I noticed a bit of rust showing on the frame the other day - and scraped some of the "black" off and it was all rusted under there! UNREAL!

So I decided to try this on another part of the frame, scratched some "black" off and, holy smokes, more friggin rust!~ :cry: :cry:

comments, condemnations? suggestions?

Nuff said.

However if there are Holes you may wanna Grind, patch and than paint.

Oh another trick a newfie friend of mine should me. and it has kept his 83 Toy's frame in MINT condition, Is Mix Roofing tar with Gas and paint that onto the frame with a brush.

 

POR15 is like $88 a can. worth it though.

 

Maybe it's surface rust. Go around the frame and whack on it with a ball peen hammer. If it sounds solid, then it's just surface rust. But if you punch a hole in the frame, it's a different story.

 

i htink you are talking about mastic (roofing tar) mixing it with gas severly dilutes it..... thats actually how us roofers get it off our skin when we accidentally get it on... oh, and that stuff is worse than herculiner, keep it away from your hootus!

Another option that I have not heard anyone mention is Navel Jelly, I will "eat" the rust down to the metal.
then you can just grind and paint.
Might me a better optioin to the $88 can of POR.

"Navel Jelly has been used for decades. It does contain Phosphoric Acid, which converts rust (iron oxide) into Iron Phosphate, which is then ready for a good primer, and the rust will not appear thru the final coat.

Navel Jelly is sold in Home Depot, Lowes, and most hardware stores. It is truly a jelly, and is great for brushing on, and sticking to vertical surfaces. It needs to be thoroughly rinsed off but is excellent for removing rust.

Note: Do not use it on guns, unless you plan to re-blue them, it will remove the original bluing.

ahhhh - well it definetly is just surface rust, not rusted through...but for cripes sake who paints there friggin frame and then sells their truck! It was a trade in, the dealer doesnt care about the underbody as 98% of the people never look at the bottom of a car before they buy it.......

I mean geez.....I want to keep this truck for along time...so am I going to have to sand down this entire frame to get the gunk/paint/rubberized coating off and then spend money on either POR15/Rust Bullet or new paint?


what about media blasting? how much would that cost to have the frame media blasted and then painted? where would I go for such a thing to have it done right?

I dont want a rusty frame - rusty truck, hood, doors, wheels...fine - but NOT the friggin frame

 

that's nothing... my truck is so rusty it ate through the brake and fuel lines! I'm in the process of replacing them all and coating the frame.

 

do you have access to a hoist? get a pair of goggles, rain suit and a pressure washer. put the rig up and go to town with the pressure washer, let it dry out then prime and paint to your hearts content.

its going to be a messy, time consuming job. budget a weekend to do it right.

I looked over some used Tacoma's on a dealers lot even though I own one. I noticed right away that all five of them had a fresh coat of black sprayed under the entire bottom even the pickup bed. They were definitely trying to make it look brand new. Look at Eastwoods Rust Encapsultor it might be a good fix.

 

Well it's still better than a jeep.
Take the bed off and scrape all the rust off or vibrate it off with an airhammer. Then POR15 it.

 

WELL -

I got some rust bullet, took my hunting knife and scrapped the loose rust off and just threw gobs of the stuff on bad parts of the frame....

currently the underbody of my truck looks like some kind of mutant spotted zebra, but thats cool right?

 

what is POR15? I had similar problems to Jon when i took off the bed of my 98 taco. all under the bedliner was mud, stones, glass and rust--who would have thought to look under there during the test drive.

 

if you are talking on the bed I'd recommend Line-X....i'm so impressed with how tough that stuff is it still amazes me.....

i think por15 is gonna be a little to slick to do the inside of a bed...its more like a rustoleum effect but does alot better job....its good stuff for an undercarriage....

 

POR15 is a sef etching/rust inhibiting primer. Works really good. As for your frame, I had the same problem. I just took a wire wheel on a grinder to it, the primed and painted it with rustoleum.

 

Just por-15'd some rusted spots along the exterior seam between the bed and wheel wells. I'll see how this stuff holds up in Vancouver, BC, Canada weather.
