Low compression

hey everyone,

I'm looking into buying a 89 toy p/u 3.0l v6.

It has low compression, so the price is ridiculously cheap.

what exactly could be causing the low compression? I just want to know what I'm getting into if i do purchase it. Does it need new HG, or is it something more serious.

I may just try to find a remanufactured engine to throw in there..

any help is appreciated

How low is low, and on which cylinders. If it's low on 2 joining cylinders and OK on the rest then that's probably a head gasket. If all of them are low then your looking at worn rings. Even if it's a head gasket on a 89 you may want to do a valve job while the heads are off, so that will add to the cost.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm going to be running a compression check on it tonight to see what cylinders are bad...

they arent low...but all cylinders have should have a certain % difference...and the difference between 172 and 160 is really gonna be pushing it....I dunno what that % is, you may be able to check the service manual about this....

160 and 172 are only about 7% apart, so it should be OK.
