Impossible alternator bolt!
I have an '81 pickup with 22R and the damn alternator pivot bolt fell out. Well I ordered the bolt and Toyota sent me one but I'll be damned if I can't get it in! I have a friend who is going to put it on a lift and remove the skid plate to try to get this thing on.
Has anyone else strggled with this bolt? What did you do? When I say pivot bolt I mean the one that the alternator pivots on where the other bolt holds it in place for belt tension.

If you mean it won't go all the way into the hole, either something is in there blocking the bolt, or the alternator isn't squarely lined up with the bracket. Might also mean you've got the wrong size bolt.
If you mean you can't get it to the hole in the first place, you may well have to remove something and a belt to get to it. Depends on how your truck is equipped.
Normally, this bolt is an easy remove and install (replaced a lot of alternators over the years).

I have seen where someone has replaced an alternator, and got the wrong one from the parts store. The pivot holes on the wrong alt. are too small for the correct bolt. (8mm vs 10mm) Not sure what size you should have off hand.
Does it go all the was in, but not start threading, or does it not go in at all?

Here's the kicker. The damn thing went in fine when I put the truck on ramps and removed the skid plate Trouble is there is nothing to thread into. I had to put a nut on the bolt. That's not right I am sure, but the alternator is on straight and securely mounted.

They used a nut on the end of the bolt, it didn't thread into the bracket. So everything is actually just fine.
