Help with carbuerated engine....

I have a 1984 Toyota Tercel with a 4 cyl carbuerated engine. It takes about 5 to 6 good key turns with mashing the gas pedal to get it to start. Once it's warmed up it starts up fine.

My problem is when I turn the engine off it majorly knocks and shakes. I have done a tune-up on it already.

Do I need the carbuerator re-built? Can I adjust it somehow?

Sounds like it could be bad gas, fouled jets, choke thermostat or timing.

I had an '86 Chevy that did the same thing. I replaced the fuel filter, raised my octane rating, changed spark plugs & wires, and distributor cap. It turns out the timing was off a bit and the carburetor just needed to be rebuilt. The carb on that big ol' 400 was a cinch. The carb on your Tercel is a PITA. It's similar to the one in my mother's Corolla. Call around to carb shops in your area. Around here, the average quote was $275. Check your choke thermostat first. An easy way to do that is take the air cleaner assembly off and look at the carb. There should be a butterfly that should be 1/2 to 3/4 open. Then, turn your ignition to the "on" position without starting it and pump the accelerator 2-3 times. Look at the butterfly again. If it isn't closed, it should be. It may either need to be freed or rebuilt. You can free it yourself using carb cleaner. Just spray some down the throat and on the butterfly while the engine is running and try to work the butterfly. Let it sit for a while and see if the butterfly closes again using the same steps as before. If it doesn't the choke thermostat may need to be replaced.
