I am considering sealing my garage floor. Given the effort to do this properly (clearing the garage, cleaning the floor etc.) I would like to do this ONLY once. Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, on how to do this? Products that have held up well over time? Resist tire lift? Easy to keep clean?

 

<96 Runner> has a really nice garage. Even has a pic of it in his sig. I don't know if it's sealed or not but it's really clean and spot free. You might wanna try to pm him.

 

Home depot had a kit I was looking at to do an epoxy seal on a garage floor. IIRC it was about 50-60 bucks for a 1 car size.

When I was at Boeing, they sealed an entire warehouse floor. Corey, remember the Obermeyer building? Cost several mil $$$. Then they sold it.

I worked installing stereos at Circuit City for several years and had to do the floors SEVERAL times. THE MOST IMPORTANT thing is prepping it. Use a cleaner degreaser and then an etcher. THe etcher is very important for the paint to stick. And make sure you hose off ALL of the etcher until the water is perfectly clear. THe 2 part epoxy is what we used, but I have a neighbor that had good results with the 1 part stuff at Home Depot, but he did the proper prep work. If you don't prep it right it WILL peel. After you paint it, apply a sealer and a coat of industrial floor wax or 2. This way the black marks that your tires leave will wipe up with a rag or finger, or non black shoe soles.

I've not done anythong to my floor, but floors like these I wouldn't mind having.

 

2 part epoxy roll-on. Took 4 cans to complete it all (2 coats). 2-day walk-on dry time, followed by another 2 days of dry time before you can drive on it. Someone mentioned tire marks. Yes, those happen, but they are a breeze to get off. I am one of the few people on this earth that mops their garage floor, yes I am crazy!

 

That sweet garage is missing one thing - a fridge.

 

Actually, here in PHX that is one of the worst things you can do to your electric bill. My garage reaces temps in excess of 110 degrees in the Summer, which would cause a fridge to consume 4X its normal energy useage.

Good idea, the thought has crossed my mind. But not economical. Besides, our inside fridge is literally 10ft away.

 

96 Runner, what brand did you use? How long ago? How is it holding up?

 

They have it at Lowes, I cant remember the name. All I know, is that it comes in a 2-can pack. Make sure you get the color you want.

I applied it about 10 months ago. Its holding up awesome. I will never go without this stuff ever again.

Example: I had a little mishap while changing the oil on my 4Runner last night, spilled some oil all over the floor. A couple paper towels later, gone. No trace of the oil.

The best I have to work with is a tarp spread across my gravel driveway or a discount store/ strip mall parking lot. I did my clamp together catback exhaust and diff breathers in a parking lot because my driveway was too snowy. I've done oil changes in church parking lots for the same reason.

Just be glad you guys have garages. My truck has never been in one while i've had it.
