I have a 93 4runner 4cyl 5spd sr5, i cant remember when i bought it a few months ago if the brake light was on in the dash but the battery light was. I had to replace the gauge cluster with a cable spedo, and the new one i have in there is from an auto but i took the lights out that i did not need. Now in the dash i have the brake light and battery light on but yesterday after putting in the cb radio the battery light only comes on sometimes while it is idling, but when im driving it flashes randomly. Now this sounds like a classic alternator problem, but my dash reads a very high voltage of somewhere around 15 and 16v. Also my when i turn on my headlights my dash lights dont come on so i cant see how fast im going at night, but it was always like this.
Can any one help me with any of these problems

Yeah i think i will just go ahead and try to fix the alternator, but even though all the signs point to the alternator ive been driving like this for several months and the voltmeter keeps giving me good readings, and this was during our very cold winter where it is usually below -20

 

still could be alternator and probably is..... the day i drove my truck around without a battery, my brake and battery light were on......
