Aftermarket O2 Sensors?

Hi,

I swear I've seen it posted somewhere....

I'm looking for an aftermarket O2 sensor for my '86 4Runner. I pulled the Check Engine Light codes today and that's what it's saying.

I've already paid Toyota Canada $300 for one O2 sensor this year and I will not do it again if I have a choice.

Anyone know of a good one? Bosch perhaps? How about a part #?

Also, besides the usual tune-up stuff, would this possibly explain my relatively lousy mileage?

Thanks again,

Warren

I just pulled the code on my '94 and need to replace my o2 as well. I'm going to be calling around tomorrow to see what other brands I can go with. I shall keep you posted to see what I find. As far as gas mileage, that is possibly one of the reasons. If your o2 sensor's not reading right, it won't send the correct info to the ecu and so maybe, just maybe your engine is running on the rich side......Wasting fuel.

Autozone and Checker sell Bosch. They invented the O2 sensor and I've never had problems when I've replaced with Bosch before.

It's easy. You'll find it on your exhaust pipe just before the cat. Worst case scenario is rusty bolts.

02 sensor

Discount Auto parts sells em for $39.95us. Just replaced mine on my 85 as preventative maint. Recently bought vehicle w/190K figured it couldn't hurt to replace. They aren't usually prone to failure. If you recently replaced it I might check to see if there was cause for failure, leaded gas, coolant leak in exhaust, non sensor friendly silicone RTV, and even excessive oil leakage on the sensor will cause them to fail. O2 sensors work off of oxygen diffusion through the ceramic core. The diffusion gradient creates an electircal potential and bingo, that's how your get your reading. At any rate, yes, a fouled up (for any of the above reasons) will certainly cause an O2 to fail. And yes, a failed O2 sensor will cause higher than normal fuel consumption.

just for everyone edification

I've called a few places and so far, if I went with the sensor that comes with the harness so that it's direct plug in, the dealership is the cheapest @$126. If I go with an aftermarket w/o the harness and have to splice, the cheapest I have found is $55.

Niehoff is the brand I picked up today. I got it from a BC Autoparts place called Lordco for around $55 US.

It came with a gasket, screw-on flange (??) and the correct connector so no splicing required.

I'll let you know how it works out. I'm no longer getting the trouble code and I'm hoping for better mileage.

Time will tell...

It seems like you got a good price for a direct replacement. What's up with my jacked up prices? Does anyone know of a direct replacement brand? I just can't believe the dealer is the cheapest.

Salue

At that price, I might have to go up to BC just to purchase this.

Warren,
If I can't find one for cheaper, is there any way I can have you purchase and send to me and I'll pay you? I think that might be the cheapest way so far. I pulled the efi fuse and the check engine light went away so I think that my sensor is starting to go bad since it hasn't reappeared. But I know it will in a matter of time.

Search the 'net for Niehoff. Their web site seems to be down right now but I'm sure you could get one in your area. Bosch also sells a direct replacement which I would have preferred but couldn't buy as quickly so I tried the Niehoff.

I'd never heard of them either...

If you can't find anything in your area let me know.

Good luck,

Warren
