3rd Gen Brake rotor problems

3rd Gen Brake rotor problems
Hi all.
I've got a 99runner and I've had to change my rotors twice on it. They seem to be warping very easily. I've got a buddy that's got a 2000 runner and he's had to do the same.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?
I know I'm not hard on the brakes, so I'm sure it's not my driving... I prefer to coast to a stop rather than use my brakes... but regardless, they become potato chips after a few thousand km's...
Any idea as to how this can be corrected...
Thanks!
Kevin.

Do a search on this forum, you will find lots of people having problems with Toyota rotors.
Dump the factory crap and get Brembos.

Brembos don't warp. OEM replacements are more than sufficient.
Slotting improves wet braking and looks cool. IMO, not worth the cost, but that's my opinion. What you do for looks is yours.

took mine off yesterday, its really easy save yourself some money! take them to brake masters, they should charge $10/disk to machine.
the guy who worked on my rotors is a 99' 4runner owner
he told me that the 4runners with rear drum brakes are warping their disks every 3 months or so.
he said do not use high temp ceramic pads, the rotors are cheap and cannot take the heat of ceramic pads. he said make sure the rear drums are adjust properly, because your truck will be using the front disk for all stopping force if your drums are not tight enough. while your rear end is jacked up, spin the wheel, it should stop after one complete turn, if it spins freely...
then your truck is using fronts only to stop = warpage.
always make sure you put new pads on, once you warp your rotor, the brake pad has been altered by the temp too.
also, he said once they warp, they will always warp back to the same shape after time. his description: its like hardened steel, once its bent, its never the same.
like unhappy99 said, brembo would be my choice. my only concern is that the toyo setup is not about high heat, brembos can take high heat. performanceproducts has those slotted disks, but i have brembos on the saab 9.3, and those are beasts!!!
peace

No reason to throw good money after bad by having crappy Toyota rotors turned. They will warp again, just quicker than before.
My factory rotors warped the first time I pulled a trailer. And yes, the trailer has good brakes. Replaced them with Brembos and have been towing lots for two years with no warping whatsoever.
Its simply the rotors. Toyota's are crap, and they know it. Warped rotors is one of their TSBs, and has been over several generations.

All of the above, and also check to make sure your lugnuts are properly torqued. Over-tightened lugnuts can contribute to warpage as well.

Does anybody got a part number on those Brembo rotors for 3rd gen runners with 16" wheels/4WD & thus the "heavy duty" brakes?

I think the guy who said Toyota rotors are adequate is making a sick Joke, they are a POS. For every 1 person you find who likes their oem brakes you will find 1000 who think they are the worst part of a 4runner. (except maybe the whole headgasket clan...)
Brembos are the way to go!!!

Oakboy,
I did change my front rotors for the same reason to slotted Brembo with PerformanceFriction pads and also I changed my brake oil to one with higher boiling points. I'm loving it!
The problem that I had after was that my brake felt spongy because of bad bleeding. So make sure that you use a bleeding machine, since it fixed my problem.
Good luck.

I replaced my OEM rotors with Brembos. The dealer did the TSB at about 25,000 miles and put new rotors on to replace the originals which had warped. Those were fried less than 20,000 miles later. My Brembos have almost 8k on them and no problem so far. I just need to do the rear brake adjustment...

I guess I'm one of the lucky one's, with over 94k on my 4Runner, I still have the stock pads and rotors. Never had any problems, but when I do replace them it'll be with Brembo's and PF pads......

Warped 2 sets of factory rotors.
Replaced with Brembos and PBR pads... they're warped now, too.
Wheels are torqued correctly.
So from what I'm reading, I have to adjust the rear brakes and this problem should go away? How come Toyota does not do this? The original 2 sets of rotors were replaced by Toyota.
It would be interesting to see if the reason these rotors are warping has to do with the fact that most people with AUTO transmissions come to a stop light and sit on the brake...cooking the pads and rotors.
For the people that do NOT have a warping problem, do you sit at stop lights with the brakes OFF?
I also drive a BMW, 5 spd. I religiously throw the car in neutral and take my foot OFF the brake pedal when at a stop light... unless of course I'm on a hill. Then I pull the e-brake

I have a 5sp and I geared down at lights to help with the braking and still got warped rotors. I live on a hill which didn't help. Now I have brembos.

Any suggestions on where to order the Brembo replacements from?
