hey all,

i put the front timing chain assembly together (the tensioner, both guides and the sprocket for the crank shaft) so right now i put the head on and the piston is at tdc. im trying to put the chain and camshaft sprocket on the cam shaft but it just wont budge. ive tried turning the crank to give me more chain and that didnt work. so what is the best way to go about doing this?

I found I had to remove one or both of the chain guides to get enough slack in my chain to get in into place on the camshaft.

 

i think i used a rubber hammer, but there is a better method i'm sure.

 

Can't you push the tensioner in to give you more slack to get the spocket on the end of the cam??

 

It helps to reach down there with a large breaker bar or long stick of metal to pry the tensioner back in and then you'll have just enough slack to slip the cam sprocket on.

 

You have to push back the tensioner. When I replaced mine I wedged a small block of wood with a string attached to keep the tensioner pushed back. After the sprocket is attached to the cam just pull the string and the wedge will come out.

 

the way i get my cam sprocket on(no way i can put it on by hand) is to stick a small prybar in one of the holes, rest the angled part on the camshaft, and walk it up onto the cam
