What Year 22re Do I need for a '94?
Hi guys,
I just bought a '94 Toyota Xcab pickup with no engine in it, but originally had a 22re. I've read enough on here to know that not just any old 22re will swap directly into it, but haven't figured out the reasoning behind it. What year of 22re will basically plug straight in to the wiring harness of the '94? I have a line on a 22re out of an '86 with the complete wiring harness. Will this work if I'm willing to splice the correct plugs on? If I use an '86 engine, do I have to use an '86 computer?
I have also found a 22re out of a '93 2wd pickup. No p/s, no a/c, both of which are on the '94. I know the oil pans are different, but what else? Would this be better to use than the '86?
Educate me, please. Thanks in advance for your help,

Another 22RE (not 79-82) get the engine, wiring harness and ecu if possible. Make life easier.

The thing is, I don't have any of the sensors, etc from the '94. I just have an empty engine bay with a wiring harness from a 22re hanging there.
Is the computer from an '86 compatible with the other parts of the '94 electrical system (guages etc)?

Are there any physical differences between 85-89 22re's and 90-94's? I noticed that the HP rating is different between the two (105 vs 112) Is this because of the computer or sensors, or is it something internal?

Will the '86 computer work with the non-engine related electrics of the '94? That's my main concern at this point. I have access to the '86 engine with wiring pigtails for every sensor, etc. I also have access to an '86 computer.
So, can I safely assume that I could use the '86 computer and splice the '86 pigtails on the '94 harness and expect it all to work?
Thanks for your help

Again, NO you cannot just splice on the plugs and have it work correctly.
94's have more sensors, in different locations (including o2, and its an OB1 system) and require different electronics than the 86 to function properly. You need to find someone with a donor 94 to get all the electronics you need for your truck.

Would the '93 2wd engine be a better option than the '86 or am I still going to run into problems with the computer/injectors being different?
If not, why would toyota change their engines so much as to make them incompatible?
