changing my mind on engine swap! 22re to 7m
#1
I have been reading alot on this swap and I think it would be better than a chevy 4.3. What do you guys think about the 7m swap? seems like a pertty kick butt engine other than head gasket prblems!

Sorry to dig an old post but I have to add. I bought my 85 pickup with a 7mgte swapped in. It has the stock drivetrain besides the engine, 5.29 gears and lockers. I was a bit worried about the power over the 7mge to but soon realized that it has more or less the same effect on the drivetrain as the non turbo would. Being as it take a second or 2 for the turbo to kick in, your already moving pretty good before the turbo even has its effect. Its the instant power change thats going to break your drivetrain. The turbo doesn't even kick in in first gear unless you really stuff your foot in it and hold it there. (not reccommended) More or less, as long as you arn't giving it 6000rpm and dropping the clutch when the light turns green you'll be fine. Get a metal head gasket, keep the boost levels stock and you won't have the dreaded hg issues of the 7m.
I think its perfect for highway driving. I never have to down shift. Just get 1-2 lbs of boost and I can climb any hill on the highways. Plus its fun racing guys in fancy mustangs on the highway (good story right there) and keeping up with them. Keeps em' guessing.

Side note: A guy I work with has a LC fj 40 on 37's, stock drive train, with a 350 from his old drag car pushing about 600hp. He just blasts through anything. He may as well have an on/off switch for a throttle. His drive train is fine. I didn't think it would last but it has.
