can I take the turbo off my 22rte and make it a 22re?

There is a '87 toyota pickup with a 22rte that i am interested in buying, but i would like to change it in to a 22re. So can i just take off the turbo and change wiring harness or is it more complicated? Thanks for your help in advance

you can do this but you would have to change at least the computer, manifold, head pipe for the exhaust, and intake piping.

what is the reason you dont want the turbo on it?

Thanks for the info, i dont want the turbo because i'd have to run premium gas and i have heard there not as reliable. But i know that the 22rte engine id build better to handle the turbo.

Honestly, I would just buy the truck you want instead. My 22RE is slow with 9.3:1 compression, now take that same motor and lower the compression to 7.5:1...

It'll be a dog.

You COULD run gas in the turbo, but you really should run premium.

If they extra $.20/gallon is killing you, its time to sell it and buy a corolla. Seriously. Taking the turbo off because you can't afford premium is just plain silly.

turbo is a little harder on the bottom end... think thats why people say "not as reliable"

I'm researching a book called maximum boosting, recommended to me by M Hooper, and in there it shows how the stresses incurred on the bottom end when the piston is at BDC and reversing direction are so large that the added 'stress' of turbo-ing a motor is nothing at all. Now an argument could probably be made for added stress on the head gaskets.....

you could always take the turbo off and put a blower on instead.

With the right tuneing you can run regular with the turbo but you would need to add some sort of management to it. if you have acces to E-85 you could always set it up to run that. if you pull the turbo off let me know i might be interested in buying it off you along with all the extras that go with it.

I'm pretty sure you could find someone to swap your turbo for their non turbo setup. But you'll want the non-turbo head too, due to the higher compression in the non turbo.

Talking turbo off?

I don't think so; I drove my 86 p/u turbo on nothing but regular gas for 5 years, before I passed it to my son, and He uses regular too, but depends were you live, Here on California our reg. has 87/octanes.. And even if you has to burn the most expensive gas, so what, that puppy worth every single peso.

And i will buy all your turbo parts lol. Honestly the extra 15-20 cents in gas is a small price to pay for the headache you will have changing your set up to NA, labor, parts, down time etc. Like death cougar said just buy a corolla and sell the truck.

I run 87 octane in my turbo all the time. Runs the same as when I put 91 in it.

And you can still run the turbo ecu without the turbo. Heck, you can run the non-turbo ecu with a turbo for low boost. They're very similar fuel and timing maps

And someone mentioned maximum boost. Everybody needs to read that book. It's awesome.

+1 on that. If you're looking at *any* type of performance mod on any engine (even your lawnmower, heh), that book is a must-read. The insight it bestows on you sets you on the path of enlightenment (and will save you big bucks down the road).
