Sand Mats
Found these advertised in fourwheeler magazine. http://sandmats.com/
Basically a semi flexible mat that you can place under your tires to help get you out of the sand, snow or mud. Like the new and improve version of a Marston Mat. Actually not to bad $146 for a pair, the pair weighs in at 26lbs and 4' long. I have tried plywood and other junk in the past, I think I will pick up a pair of these down the road...

Looks similar to those antifatigue mats cashiers at home depot and costco stand on, but more rigid.
I feel sorry for the idiot that buirried that diesel pusher up to the axles. I don't think the sand mats would help that.

I had not thought about this thread for 3+ years, kind of forgot about it.
My father in law gave me a 4x8 sheet of high-density polyethylene (3/8") just doesn't have the dimple pattern- they make these matts out of. probably use about $20 -30 worth of 3/8 x 1" bolts. Might try this project on monday

There was an exhaustive writeup in a previous edition of Overland Journal on sand ladders/mats.

I've seen a few different types of sand mays, or traction aids to get unstuck, but they all seem so expensive. I've seen a couple guys build wooden ladder frames with "steps" on them to help get out. I like the collapsible ones, but just out of my price range.
