Wagoneer front axle?

Wagoneer front axle?
I've read a few places that the wagoneer axle is useable for the SAS. I've got access to one super, mega cheap for my 2nd gen...so I'm thinking of picking it up and holding on to it while I save up for the rest of the parts.
What do I need to know about this vs. the solid yota front axle?

"Hey Lucy, you've got some reading to do!"
But, asking questions is a start. First, make sure that D44 is not a vacuum assist model. If it is, it won't do you any good and you don't want it.
After that, there have hundreds of threads about the pros and cons of the D44 vs the Toy axle. Read those threads here and on other forums.

thanks
I didn't know it was a D44.
basically when I get it, it's getting regeared and a lockright locker anyways. Though I do know they have cable actuators to get rid of the vacuum assist crap, too.

Don't get the cable thing either, something else to screw up imo.
Just get a 1 piece shaft from a non disco Waggy.
Avoid the disco model D44 if you can though. Save time and money.

Waggy Dana 44's will require you to run a 31.5" spring perch width... That's 2.5" wider than the Toyota, IIRC. That means you'll be fabricating everything on your own. I know of one person who went this route and wasn't overly happy. YMMV.

This could be done using plating and 3/8" or thicker steel, welded to the frame, no? Obviously with gussets and stuff.
Hmm.
I emailed a couple parts places about 84/85 Yota axles they have but haven't gotten any response yet.

from what I've read... waggy's do use the 31.5" perch width.. Sky Mfg makes a kit for hanging dana's with this width.. the only problem with the waggy axle is it's not quite "full width" but it still uses the wide perchs, so it's really easy for the leafs to contact the tire... sooo.... maybe the tacoma guys can chime in on this.. it's just what I've heard over at pirate.

How about new spring perches on the axle to the propper Toy width? I think it would be easier...

yeah. I'm trying to analyze the cost prohibitive problems with this wagoneer axle and it seems like it'll be easier/cheaper to go with the Yota setup....
especially since I'm new to the axle swap thing.
So I guess I have to make some phone calls since these salvage yards won't return emails!

Not going to work. It would require placing one perch on top of the pumpkin. If the OP is insistent on a Dana 44, go custom cut from a Chevy. Read about it here: http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/4runner/sas/

question though...why not just use a toy axle? its stronger & easier swap IMO than a D44. you should be able to source a pre 85 axle for approx the same cost as a D44...

umm...missed mine & WATRD's posts above? you'll need a late 70's or pre 80's axle. watrd's is an 83 and is a drivers side drop. im guessing from your sig line, you'd need one for a 2nd gen runner = passenger side drop.
