89 ext cab SAS
i just finished the 3.4 engine swap in my lil toyota and im ready to tackle the next challenge in making my truck more trail freindly and more fun for me. i gotta try to move fast enough to avoid spending trying to fix the worn out IFS thats under the truck right now. i hate spending money on parts i dont want.
my stock 89 truck. its ready for some fun

im about to buy 2 early 80s 4x4 toyota trucks for parts. as well as getting some extra SAS parts from a few freinds. once i get all that stuff to the shop ill know where i need to go to start this swap.
my goal is to lift it up just high enough to clear 35s and to rebuild the axles with some 5.29s and some kinda locker (i aint decided what kind yet) so stay tuned. its gonna be slow go for a lil while till i can get all the parts here and get it started.

alright i finally got a few parts and stuff at my shop to do an update on this. im trying to sell off some stuff to get the money to get this project moving along so ive been busy as heck lately.
i think im gonna try to get this thing running. its complete but has the engine taken apart.

im gonna strip all the parts i need for the SAS off of this truck. the body seems to be in decent shape so i donno whats gonna happen to it after.

oh and the penalty box

not sure if there is anything on this thing worth keeping so it just became the new scrap bin.
next up im gonna buy the parts i need to do the SAS. the front spring hanger, the shackle sleeves and shackles, pass high steer arm and shock hoops.
on the rear im gonna go with the 63IN chevy spring swap and double shackles probably. as soon as somethin i got sells im gonna try to get the axles built and ready to go under the truck.

yeah... my best freind owned that truck back in highschool... we trail rode that thing out at the local river almost every sunday for around a year or so. alot of our freinds had badass 4wheelers and we kept up with them in that ole yota. it would be cool if i could get it runnin for a little of nothin and have somethin to play in as i got my 89 done right

okay so i have alot of my old chevy stuff sold.. and about to sell more. got my solid axle trucks beside the shop ready to build. ive been on here and on pirate and a few other places seein what yall yota guys have been doin to yalls trucks and im gonna write down what ive come up with...
prolly gonna go with trail gears front spring hangers
trail gear shackles and through frame sleeves
the rear springs from my 81 toyota truck up front. (gonna have to play with the spring pack to get it right i figure)
trail gear high steer arms, drag link and TREs
trail gear knuckle rebuild kit.
out back im gonna run 63 inch chebby springs (hopefully i can get the ride hight perfect) and possibly double shackles.
also gonna run 4.88 gears with a yukon grizzly locker out back and leave the front open for now with stock birfs. and gonna run some 35x12.5s.
i know ive left some stuff out but i just wanted to get my ideas out there and see what yall think. i have some 12 inch travel rancho shocks layin around that im gonna use till i can afford good shocks.
im not gonna run full highsteer yet so i hope i can get by without moving my steering box forward for now. although thats a future mod. when yall move the box forward do yall buy a kit for the through frame tubes and plates or what? i saw something on marlins site but didnt know if its what i was looking for.
also im gonna run my IFS brake setup (calipers rotors and hubs) to gain the width needed. only thing i havent been able to figure out is if i can take the manual locking hubs off my solid axle and bolt them to my IFS hubs... ill keep reading to figure out what i gotta do... thanks ahead of time

aight so short update. i bought them 63 inch chevy springs from rangertoy the other day. and got some stuff sold so i could buy all the SAS parts... i still need to sell more parts to be able to buy the gears and lockers before i can do this swap... time is just sooo slow right now
the lift springs from the 81 toyota pickup... gonna hopefully make a good front spring pack for my truck

got all the excess brackets cut off of the axle and ready to tear it down. i wont tear it down till i get all the parts to put it back together

pile of brackets that was cut off the housing

i tried to order parts from trailgear friday evening but i guess they just didnt want my business for now.. so ill have to wait till monday mornin to try to call in the order and get it done... i did get the steering box relocation kit ordered from marlin crawler easily though... stay tuned

You might be better off fabbing your own stuff rather than dealing with a company that doesn't want your business. You should be able to order stuff either through a vendor here, such as wabfab, or just get the (imo) stronger marlin crawler highsteer, and get bushings and hardware through them while you are at it. I am at the tail end of a trail gear "ifs eliminator" SAS, and I ended up swapping my own parts in place of, or heavily modifying their hanger and shock towers, and discarding their springs in favor of my stock rears. Just my opinion, of course. Ymmv.

starting to tear the hubs down. removing the outter hub

outter hub

there is a snap ring in there that keeps the hub held onto the axleshaft. gotta remove that before you can pull the hub.. i origionally forgot about it ha

hub removed

when i got to this point i realized why the thing was so loose.. the wheel bearing nuts had backed out. bet that was a fun drive for whoever owned this thing

i removed the wheel bearing nuts and forgot to pull the caliper to slide the rotor/wheel hub off

next to remove is these two plates

at this point you just hit the spindle with a soft face hammer it just took 2 smacks and fell off for me

and now to pull the birfeild out. i didnt realize there was 2 flat spots machined on the birf that you had to line up to get it out. once i did that it slid right out
