Does anyone know of any other tarins that will carry a vehicle besides the Amtrak Auto Trainwhich only heads south? I would love to do it as I said before, but I'd rather take a train to the Oregon area maybe (the nice parts from "Stand By Me") or somewhere out on the west coast that is a lot closer to AK.
By taking the train I would still be able to see some "unseen" sights from the rail car, plus I will be up for more driving since I won't have spent over a week driving to AK.
Plus I won't have to stop to go to the bathroom or get something to eat or drink or worry about rest, cause I can do it on the train while still making progress.
I wish Amtrak can slap a car on the end or a train heading that way and just haul some people that may be interested.
Tell 'em I/we're going to save ANWR,
and we need their help.

Maybe I can send an e-mail to Amtrak and ask what some options are.

There IS a travel planning subject in the drop down menu.

I think that it may be a better option, perhaps not financially, but realistically, for people to arrange for their rigs to be transported to a major city that is relatively close to alaska. After driving for that long of a period of time-assuming nothing breaks-(talk about a waste of time- getting to canada only to have something major go wrong and have to ship it back home) people are not going to be as thrilled about going offroading in a truck they just spent a week straight in. Not to mention the return drive would be brutal. This would also save time/ allow for more time in AK. If yall still wanted the 'trek' feel, shipping to Vancouver or Seattle is still a pretty good drive to AK.

Off topic-nice avatar!
Back to Alaska now.

I would have to do this trip in summer (late June, July, August) as this is the only time I could get enough weeks to travel the distance (from CA). As a teacher I have the benefit of the summer holidays.

I'm interested.
I vote for 2007.... because in order to do anything of this magnitude, I will need to find another job that pays more than this one. And move wherever that takes me, and I wouldn't want to go without paying off my credit cards.
But I'm doing that anyway, first interview is next Monday.... Nothin' better to motivate me than a trip to Alaska!

My 2 cents regarding the railway shipping option for those interested:
If it's at all even feasible the best bet would more than likely using the Canadian Pacific Railway and having your rig sent up to Edmonton. Edmonton to AK is MUCH shorter of a drive than Vancouver to AK.
Edmonton is the end of the line as far as rail goes. The northern half of Canada doesn't have any major rail lines.
Then from Edmonton to Whitehorse, it's about 20-25 hours driving straight through.
I'd like to see a 2 day side route from Whitehorse to Juneau (the most beautiful short trip hands down). Then have Anchorage as the final destination. If that's too much driving for some we could cut the final destination down to Fairbanks, but it's not as pretty

And as for dates, best for me is summer 2007 because I graduate undergrad in spring 2007. So it'd be an awesome graduate break.

Alaska in the fall is magical. After Sept. 15 prices on everything drop, local folks are very relaxed, there isn't much traffic, and the low sunlight makes every picture perfect. Cool days, cooler nights, rain, sun, snow. It's awesome.
