Wheeling at the OBX
#1
I'm headed down to the OBX next month and want to go wheelin'. I know we can ride down the beach, but does anyone know of any trails out that way? We've got my pretty much stock Yota and a Heep Rubicon (with a kick ass winch, he seems to get stuck alot
)

Having only been there once and recently I can only relay my experience of a too short week. We were north of Corolla, in the 4x4 access beaches. My stock Tun did very well on the sand. Behind the dunes are "roads" crisscrossing up and down and to the sound side. They seem easy when dry but I think if it were to rain a bit and fill up the shallow spots with water it could get interesting. There are ATV trails that a Tundra fits down in a lot of places. I wish I could tell you more but we only had a day of exploring and the rest was beach time. We did help dig out a couple of vehicles ("I've got'em aired down to 30 already!") after a couple days of dry weather the beach gets really soft and deep above the high tide line! Enjoy!

Jim,
That is where I am going to be Labor Day week (near Penny's Hill?). What was it like up there? Do you remember what the area you stayed in called My wife is nervous about having to drive up the beach to get to the house we are renting. I told her not to worry, if her Exploder gets stuck, I would pull her out with the Toy.

i would be, but i'm still a few hours away, and though I can't drive on it, I have a beach thats 20min away. I'd come up, but I need to chill on the gas consumption SOMETIME, ive been gone everyweekend since Ive started my summer class. I put over 1,300 miles in the runner last weekend alone going to tellico.

PirateFins, We were at North Swan Beach. Its about 8 miles up the beach from Corolla where the road ends. I don't know Penny's Hill. Tell your wife it'll be alright, it's not bad. If you can drive along the edge of the ocean (without getting in the ocean) it's quite easy and you could run in 2wd for a limited time. It only gets difficult above the high tide line-the sand dries out and gets real soft and deep. If the Explorer is stock I'd stay below the high tide line. Air down to at least 20psi (if you spin or get stuck drop to 10-15).
Good All Terrains help. Its a blast! Watch for horses, we had a few that would feed in our carport every morning! It'll be a good time, I really wish I was going back soon but will have to wait till next year!

Ok in a strange twist of fate- I'm going back to OBX in October! After having such a good time in June, all of my in-laws decided they wanted to go too! So now we have 14 people, 4 trucks (1 Tundra, 1 Titan, 2 Rams) and to top it off, since its my wife's B-day that week, her Dad is paying our share of the house! Its good to be alive!

I do live down here, but before I did, the last time I came here on vacation, we stayed about a mile north of Penny's Hill, almost right behind that cottage that's practically IN the ocean during high tide. Sometimes you can't even get past that house if the tide comes up enough. Anyway, we still go up to that same spot to hang out on the beach with the dogs and to see if we can spot the horses. Have fun while you're here!Shawn

Amocat00, that'd be this weekend, Saturday Oct 9th. Sorry I've been slacking too. We'll be at Carova beach this time. Trucks ready and most of our stuff is packed, how's the water? how's the beach?

Well, it's supposed to be really nice for like the next week, mid 70's, then up in to the 80's for the weekend. You should have great weather the whole time.

Yeah I was on weather.com yesterday and it looks pretty good. We'll probably get a little fishing time and hopefully its warm enough for the kids to swim. If you happen to get up that way stop by and say hi. I'll be the black Tundra on the beach between the silver Titan and two Rams. We have a first row house so if you nose around at all the trucks will be easy to spot.

Well I made it back safe and sound. The weather was definitely cooler and wetter than spring. The beach was a lot easier to drive, the sand was much firmer. The "roads" behind the beach houses were tough. The water holes were deep and you had to be quite careful not to fall in. One of the Rams found out the hard way that the holes were deeper than they looked. You wouldn't think a puddle 2 trucks long could be that deep! Nose down up to his headlights, couldn't move back or forth! The Tundra yanked him right out and no damage was done. The night before we left we went to dinner in Duck, aired up for that trip and did not air back down for the beach. No one got stuck but it really worked the truck to get through the sand with 35psi in the tires! Really a fun trip and can't wait to go back!

Jim,
Glad to here about the good time. I know what you mean about working the truck with full tire pressure. I filled up to go golfing and didn't air back down, because we were going golfing again the next day. Also you are right about those rain "puddles" on the dune roads, check out my avaitar. That is me driving thru one of them.
Amocat00,
I know what you mean about "that cottage that's practically IN the ocean during high tide. Sometimes you can't even get past that house if the tide comes up enough." When I was down there Hur. Francis was off the coast of Fla. and high tide was up to the stilts the first 2 days. Had to time it going past there with the wave action.
Guy's here is another thread with some pics from recent OBX trips. Enjoy

piratefins, Nice avatar! I can never get anyone besides myself to take pictures of the truck, its real hard to drive and photog at the same time. When we got there on Saturday after a long days drive I eased into one of those puddles to get to the house, just when I thought I was in the clear I dropped over my bumper. Probably could have made it, but with kids restless and a very full truck to unload we backed out and edged around it. Later was the time to play. Nice pics on the other thread.
