Hollister is the only place close. There are trails up in the sierras that are stock friendly, but it's a bit more of a drive.

There's also Cow Mountain up near Ukiah, but Hollister has more "fun" stuff: an obstacle course and more "easy" trails. Cow Mtn. has a bunch of trails as well, but can be a bit hard to locate. Carnegie out near Livermore is mostly for the motorcycle and ATV crowd.

Hollister is probably your best bet. We will be going soon, I need to get my camping stuff back (dont ask).

How about Golden Gate Park? Wake up soem of those bums...(kidding..)
Check out some areas headed up around the Snow Mountain Wilderness in the Mencocino Ntl Forest- it can get a bit soupy in the rainy season (if they ever come back)...or head over near Clear Lake... or you can also come round these parts: Lassen National Forest has tons of roads that offer a wide range of 'servicablilty'...some great camping and whatnot, too If ya really wanna challege yourself... Santa Cruz Mountains...bust out soem USGS Maps- your there...

My only advice...

What does it mean when your friends think of you first as a "backroad navigator" in San Francisco? Just have to ask.

How about Frank Raines Park near Patterson, that's pretty much the bay area. Unfortunately they are closed until October but you might check with them to make sure the web info is up to date.
