Utah HELP - Bryce Canyon
So, I'm a Californian. Don't know much about Utah.
I'll be in Bryce Canyon on Saturday. Any recomendations on mild 4x4 trails close by? Even scenic trails would be cool. I'm not looking to compromise the Deathrunner that far from home, especially without others to help. But, I would like to have some fun.
Thanks

fwiw, pick up a utah atlas (delorme). there appear to be a number of forest roads in the dixie national forest, which abuts the bryce area. worth a shot. if you're in a hurry, PM me and i'll be happy to scan mine for you -- that immediate area is full of backroads.

Don't remember just how far off it was, but when I went out to Bryce with my family during Thanksgiving two years back, we did the north side of the hole in the rock trail. It is in Grand staircase escalante Natn'l Monument. Neat road, lots of history and one or two ok obstacles right at the end. Your can also climb down to the lake over the steps carved in the rock for wagons by the mormans. It's a long way down so be prepared to work to get back up, but it's worth it.

I have done that side of hole in the rock. It is a long haul, but well worth it. The views are spectacular, and its fun to walk around on the rocks. Equally impressive is that some dudes, with wagons, and horses, litterally drug themselves up from the canyon floor there. Its mind blowing.
The road is suitable for any stock SUV up to the last mile or so, and even there its mild. Nothing to break on for sure.
I highly recomend it. There are also some slot canyons along that road. PeekaBoo is there, it is amazing. I recomend spending at least two days there.

the road starts just east of the city of escalante, on hwy 12. once you get into the state, just get the delorme utah atlas and gazatteer... it's at the top-right of page 19, then continues down across 20. the scan i did for you spans the top middle of pages 18 and 19.
isaac, good to see you again tonight.
