Tinkham Nights

Three of us got together this evening for an evening in the Tinkham area of Washington. Waterboy (Jesse), Midiwall (Mark) and myself had the summit in mind, but figured we might get stopped by snow part way up.

We did encounter snow indeed. About a third of the way up the trail is still completely snowed in. After making a few assults on the snow, we finally came up with a technique that allowed us to make slow, but steady progress.

Once had given up on ever getting to the summit, we had to back down the ruts we had made to get to a spot to turn around. Due to a minor miscalculating, Waterboy ended up slid off to the side with just a few feet between him and a 300 foot deep gully. Eventually we decided on a way to fish him out and were on our merry way.

On the way down final stretch of trail, Midiwall jumped in piloted my rig through some tank traps and a rocky stretch of trail. Eventually he got a little more brave and here is where he ended up.

Thanks! Come wheel with us and you can take some of your own It was fun to watch my truck climb up on that rock without being in it. Mark did a great job! Once he was up on the rock, Mark jumped down from the cab and we did a little looking around. In that shot, the suspension is about 2/3 flexed. We figured that it would be maxed on a rock just shy of twice that height.

hey WATRD, do you have any close ups of how you mounted the rock lights behind the front bumper. we mounted some tractor lights under my friends trailduster before our trip last weekend, and they worked awesome, but i jsut dont have the room for those kind of lights. i already know how im gonna mount some on my sliders for the rear facing set.

I don't, but I might be able to get some at some point. I have a total of six, 55w tractor lights mounted under there. The front pair are mounted to the mount brackets for the ARB bumper and are aimed at the front of the front tires. The second set are mounted to the frame and are aimed at the back of the front tires. The final pair are also mounted to the frame and aim at the front of the rear tires.

hehehehe I tried to spot a rock of the same caliber as yours, but didn't see one, so we had to settle for the one you see in my picture. I am not sure I would have let Mark take on your rock anyway...

Well, we _think_ we're gonna try doing this once a week/two weeks at night. We kinda' kept that pace up last year at this time and it was fun.

The key think right now will be to wait out the snow line a bit more before getting a lot of trucks up there. 3 last night was a good number, 5 would have been too many and just trouble in getting turned around.

~3" a little more? who knows!!!
The part where we had trouble was way up past the bridge, the snow line showed up at about 3850' or so, then was pretty much all around the road at 3900'.

It was a good 6" of icy stuff down the middle of the road, but up to 3' along the inner edge where the drainage ditch follows down the mountain.

oh yeah, what were you guys doin to get through the snow?
We had a secret weapon... 5,000 pounds of WATRD! Seriously, Jesse and I both tried it on our own, but attempted basic snowplow manuevers versus just trying to crawl it. We didn't have the clearance to not high center, so Rob crawled it in front of us, packed the snow into basically pavement, and we were able to follow him up.

We gave up when we got to a slippery spot that, considering we were losing light fast, wasn't safe to try to push through. Rob kept slipping out of a good line, so we made the decision to call it off.

Jesse got into trouble while we were backing down and he popped out of the ruts that we had cut on the way up.

I should point out that The Going was slow enough that "on the way up" and "on the way down" were only separated by 200 yards or so. It would have taken us for EVER to try to summit last night.
