He asked me if that would be okay and I was totally floored by his offer. I said heck yeah see what you can do. I didn't even buy them there. Never know.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. Personally I'm not so worried about the rust as I am the seals. I don't really care how they look, more how they perform.

I woudl suggest you stay away from mud, or if you do, be careful to clean the shaft (uh huh huh huh) before the mud dries. When the mud dries on the piston and you compress the shock, it creates tears in the wiper seals. A little later and you will notice shock oil dripping from the seal. Not good. I delat with that issue before I had coilovers. Now I fear it with the coilovers because of the need to unload the coil. Argggh.

I did rebuild it and it wasn't too bad. I used Baja Taco's great instructions. If you ever need a hnad doing it (uh huh huh huh), I'd be down to help. I even have a place down the street from me that will sell the shock oil (hard to find).

Other than cleaning the shock shaft, you can get cloth boots that cover the coil and the shock....I just choose to be done with mud.

Sorry for the hijack.

Eric-Your sway aways are already rusting? Where at, on the threaded body of the shock?

Oh yeah, I shouldn't be on the list I saw earlier. I can't make this trip, which sucks b/c I like that trail and it's always fun to take new people up there.

Have fun and take some pics.

Yeah the threaded body and the coils are rusted a lot. I don't care so much about how they look either it is more about the fact that they threads are so rusted that I cannot adjust the coil over anymore. I actually broke a spanner wrench trying. I will see what this guy has to say about it today.

WOW!!! Now that's pretty rusty. I don't think mine are that bad, if rusted at all. I'll hit them with the wire brush from now on as preventive maintenance.

Hey sdgirl and anyone else interested, i know we always have extra seats if someone would enjoy riding along. I have 4 extra seats and most everyone has a couple passenger seats open. If someone would like to be a spotter, we will always make room for ya.

Yeah and if you can cruise along and take video. I will turn it into a catastrophe for you. Not to mention I want to see all the fun I'm missing.

Good advice actually to be a passenger/spotter, that is one way to get some experience and see up close how to do things. Even if you're more of a spectator than actually spotting it will all help.

Hey, I'm in El Cajon too, there are a few people here from east county. You should try and make one of these runs.

We need to start an email list or something so we can hit everyone up with one badass email. I think we need to become more active over in the California 4ROC section:

I'll pick anyone up that wants a ride to breakfast and or carveacre as a passenger/spotter lets say around 8 a.m. at the carl jr off of Tavern rd in alpine. I have a 86' 4runner that basically says redneck all over it. You'll hear me coming. BTW Ryan i'm gonna follow you again so i don't get lost. We'll talk about it more tomorrow when we go fishing.

What's up everyone I haven't been out in awhile but i'd like to head out with you guys on Sunday. My name is Pat and I met some of you guys last year at the Spring Break 05 trip at Superstition. I now have an 86 4Runner that is completely stock. Will I be alright doing Carveacre with it? It's not locked so let me know what you guys think.

Thanks, Pat

Andy - just left you a message on your voicemail

Yoyopnoy - It sounds like you may want to come out to Carveacre and ride with someone else, then head over to Corral Canyon where you should be fine on some of the trails there.

sdgirl619 - the Carl's Jr is visible from the exit to Alpine and the directions to the breakfast spot is posted above. The breakfast gang is going to meet at the place at around 8:15 then head to Carl's at 9am. Carveacre shouldn't last more than a couple hours so you may even get a chance to wheel at Corral Canyon - who knows.

If you can't tell....I'm STOKED about this Sunday.
