L33T35T 4Runner: i was trying to leave socal early am fri also. i will be leaving san diego though, so i may have to leave early. i may not be able to caravan though. i am still debating on wether or not i will bring my quad, which would mean i'm towing a trailer at 55mph (i can't get another ticket, my upcoming career change depends on it). so as a side note to everyone else...

...was anyone still planning on bringing or renting quads up there? i just don't want to bring mine if i am going to be the only one...

I've never driven or tried a quad in my life.
One of the reasons i'm going to pismo (besides hanging out with some kewl folks) is to rent a quad for a few hours.

maybe some of the quad gurus can chime in and give me a free tutorial/tips and so forth.

I may head off early sat. morning, leaving around 4:30 to 5am and hopefully be there around 8am to setup camp.

Someone save me a spot ?

Everybody, allow me to introduce Chris (AKA pismoboy), he will be one of the leaders and is the guru of the sand. If anybody would like some tips on how to drive in the sand--like what tire pressure, how to not get stuck, how to not blow a bead, what equipment you need, etc, talk to him. You 2wd guys may especially want to talk to him.

Exclamation ***MUY IMPORTANTE***

i know this is redundant, it's already been talked about, but everone needs to remember to bring a whip. it's not so much that you need to remember to bring it as you can buy them there i'm sure, but finding a place to put it is the problem (on the tacomas you can wrap a rag around it and stuff it in one of the pockets on the bed rail). i ran into this on my first trip to glamis with my truck. so everyone should try to figure out a solution to this problem so you don't get ticketed, or taken out by another vehicle that can't see you from the other side of the dune.

i actually made a bracket that clamps over the roof rack cross bar. when i get home i'll snap some photos of it for everyone to see and copy if ya want (took me about 10 minutes with materials from around my house). another thing that you could do is use one of these cb antenna mounts that comes out between the hood and fender.

just wanted to remind everyone

Whips are not mandatory for trucks at Pismo, although, they might be a good safety item.

Re: ***MUY IMPORTANTE***

Flags are NOT required on trucks at Pismo. Flags are only required for quads, motos, etc.

Though, on that same note, I run a flag for added saftey. You can purchase them at the store next to the beach for ~$15. But you do need a secure mount for it. My mount is simple on my Tacoma, I open my tailgate, stick the flag pole in at the edge, and slam the tailgate closed.

Guys,

I made two calls to local ATV rental shops:

BJ's is going to work out a price for us. They'll be calling me tomorrow. Here are their bikes and rates:
http://www.bjsatvrentals.com/special.cfm?pagenum=162
They recommend the 250EX for noobs and the 400EX for experienced riders

Steve's ATVs is willing to take 10% off their rates for 5 or more riders.
http://www.stevesatv.com/index.html
This is a framed site so you'll have to navigate to their bikes. It's about the same price from what I can tell.

This is what I need AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and no later than Tuesday, August 6, 2003:

I need everyone who wants to ride (no fence sitters please) and is 100% committed to reply back in this thread and let me know they want to rent an ATV. The rental places would like a firm number and from there, I can negotiate a better price b/n the two companies.

So I'm definitely going to rent two. Anyone else?

Bob

if you are a larger person, i would steer you away from the 250ex quads. the sand robs power from any bike, and this is more of a kids bike than anything. the 400ex is a very easy bike to ride, very smooth powerband. it was one of the first quads i rode, and it is very easy to learn on, but has enough power to have fun on.

bob,

i would say more than 150 lbs may not have much fun on that quad. keep in mind, this is just my opinion, it may be great for someone larger than that. they are also smaller bikes. they would definitely have a hard time getting up a lot of the dunes. i'm just going by what i see out at glamis, it is mostly kids on those bikes. keep in mind that i have never ridden one of those 250ex's. but i have ridden the 400ex, and it is a lot of fun. if i were to rent one for myself, i would definitely spend a few more bucks and get the 400. it might be a good idea next time you talk to one of those companies to ask there opinion for an adult on the smaller bike.

also, i was planning on bringing my own quad

Nope, no running water unless you count the ocean or the sprinklers they have for the surfers to wash off the sand and salt.

That's right, no showers. I went to Target and picked up a 5 gallon capacity shower thing for under $10. Its basically just a heavy gauge plastic bag with a hose and nozzle on the end of it. Just enough to rinse off. Now I just have to figure out how I'll hang the thing up.

I think I'm going to get a water pump and hook it up to the rig.
I've been thinking about a water gun for the rear of my truck for a while... I mean shower. Yeah. Shower
