I got a 4 man Wenger Matterhorn (I think) for $50 at Costco. Can't really tell you about Big 5 they all seem independent of each other...

Bob, I'm going to be there Friday afternoon but have at least 2 of my party coming in Saturday evening. Hope that helps.

Bob,
I was planning to head up there early Sat. am but from the looks of things, its probably best for Me (and 1 guest) to be there fri night. I wont be able to leave til 7pm. and probably arrive at 11pm.

1) i'm worried if its too difficult to find the group at 11pm.
2) i'm worried of getting stuck that late at night trying to find the group.

I've never been to Pismo before.

Bud

bud,

i will be there thurs night, i will be on cb radio, frs radio, and if you email me i will give you my cell phone number, in case you get lost or stuck. i'm sure that by fri night, there will be several people there already, and i'm sure any of them will be just as willing to help you, as well as anyone else as i am.

i've never been there either, but even in the most chaotic sand enviroment (pinche glamis), there is always a stranger that is willing to help someone out of the sand.

ok, looks like i will definitely be heading up there tomorrow (thursday) afternoon. the way it looks right now, i may be the first there, so i will try to find a camping spot at that gps coordinate. i have 1 person with me, and i will tell them that i have 5 alltogether just in case we need to shuttle people in and out.

i will be leaving san diego at about 5:00 pm if there is anyone along the way that feels like leaving the night before. let me know.

i'll be on cb & frs channel 12, if i remember that was the designated channel.

to the first few arriving, keep an eye out for my truck:

Camping passes are a per vehicle pass. They don't care about how many people are in the truck, car, van, whatever. If anything, you can go to the first gate, buy a pass for your truck, then go to the 2nd gate and buy a 2nd pass for your truck and then give it to another member to use who arrives later. We can get quite a few passes this way.

My best advice right now is get there as early as possible!!!!!! It will be a first come first served baises for anything that remains.

And i'll add this in, I've never ever ever seen Pismo sold out on a non-holiday weekend, BUT this summer has been a bizzare exception!!

Backup plan will be to park trucks outside pismo at night. Day passes are $4/day and good from Sunrise till 11pm.

Guys,

This is our contingency plan. We may have more ideas, but this is a workable solution which I discussed with Robinhood15000 (Steve) about a 1/2 hr ago.

In case some of the later vehicles (and guests) may not be able to stay overnight, earlier arriving attendees should overstate how many guests are in their party. That way we can still have everyone camp on the beach, and then shuttle those folks who weren't allowed to camp w/ their vehicles overnight. Confusing but read on...

For example, I'm arriving early on Friday at 3pm. I have 3 (visible) guests in my vehicle. When I check in, I'll say I have 5 guests total. If they ask where the other two are, I'll say that they're in town doing some shopping. So in effect, I've allowed for 2 more campers.

So let's say Mertztr and Sarah arrive on Saturday afternoon because he was recovering from a long night of drinking on Friday night. He arrives at Pismo and the ranger says "sorry pal, no more overnight passes are available." Well, Tom can get a day pass, have fun during the day and at night, he can find a safe, overnight parking lot. Then we can shuttle him in because I have 5 guests in my party.

Get it?

So thus, this is what we need to know:

Who is coming on Saturday and planning to camp? Please respond asap.

Thank you,
Bob Kim

Chris,

Re buying passes at each gate, I thought they write down the color and license plate of your truck in their log book? If so, that won't work.

Also, do you know what time the gates close? I believe we'll have about 2 or 3 peeps who might arrive around that time or later.

Yea, I guess that would be a kink in the plan, but not that i've really ever seen em look at the tags when you come and go.

Someone should be at the gates between 6am and 2am

L33T35T, you have a tent and a cooler, that's all you should need
i'll be heading by fountain valler about 6:00 unless i get off work early, in case you get a wild hair and feel like heading up tonight.

??? for the pismo residents: is it too windy for one of those collapsable canopies or am i ok? the only reason i'm asking is because bob has said to make sure to bring cardboard to block the wind from under the trucks.

I don't live in Pismo and haven't spent all that much time up there but I would assume that it's like any other beach at night when the wind picks up a little and flaps tents.

The fact that Bob advises cardboard if plywood is unavailable suggests that the breezes will be more annoying than destructive.

Monkey,

Can you PM me your mobile phone #? It would be good to get a report from you about the crowds (or lack thereof).

You should have my mobile # from the last mass email.

There are two entrances to the beach. If you go all the way down Grande Ave. you will end up at the first entrance.

So what CB freq and FSR (or GMSR) channel are we on again?

Both 12 as prescribed on the Pismo website?
or both 4 as prescribed in the mass e-mail?
