yeah, it's pretty much official. i was waiting to have the thread title changed till after i call up and check what kinda weekend it'll be, but it's likely to be a good one. so august 5-7 it is.

You have to buy a ticket? What exactly do I need to get? I assume ATV's with real live street legal Arizona plates will not need green stickers?

I have never been there so help me get through the red tape.

 

To get into the park for day-use, there's a small fee (I forget what it is, it's just a few bucks), but that day-use ticket only allows you to stay until something like 10pm. If you're caught camping/staying overnight with out a pass, it's a $$$ fine.

At the first Pismo 4RJ we did run into the problem if the overnight passes being sold out for some folks, so we learned our lesson that year and told everyone to make their reservations way in advance for last year's event. These passes you buy online or over the phone, or tickets, whatever you call them - they're good for the day and night use of the range you buy em for, you don't need to buy separate day and night passes at any time during your selected stay.

Go to ReserveAmerica.com and you can handle everthing online there.

It's $10/night to get your reservation, plus a $7.50 reservation fee. The ticket is based on vehicle numbers, not people. Every vehicle that moves in on its own power needs a ticket. So if you're towing some bikes or ATVs, the trailer doesn't need its own ticket. Check out the website for more information.

I poked around on the website, and our selected weekend is available for reservations. I'm guessing our weekend will sell out at some point, so for some peace of mind, make your reservations early.

As for the green and red stickers, I guess if you're street legal, no need. But street legal ATVs?? I thought that'd only apply to 4WDs and dual bikes. Anyway, more info on that here: http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=1234

 

Arizona is more liberal on what you can convert to street legal. All you have to do is add a brake light, horn and rear view mirror and buy some liability insurance.

By chance is there a large group camping site that can be reserved? Or is everyone gonna hotel it?

With respect to hotels, are there any nice spa hotels with pools on the beach in case I have to make concessions to the wife/kids?

 

When you make the reservation, it's for a nonspecific site. Like the last couple years, the yotatech crew will just meet and set up camp all together, probably near the end of the camping stretch.

where do you camp on the beach, back in the Dunes or near the water?

I try to get there early and claim a spot for the group somewhat near the bathrooms. Last year we were surrounded by lots of other groups.

 

You camp near the water, although you have to be a ways up on the beach so that when the high tide comes in you dont end up under water...

I dont remember if you have to make reservations or not to camp on the beach, or if you just pay when you get to the gate and have free range. I was out in pismo with the Nissan club i used to be involved with a last summer. Pismo is an awesome place, it will be fun. Last time though, we stayed in the campground because we had a trailer with us. So it will be first time staying on the beach for me.
