Death Valley 2006 : March 24 (Friday) – March 28 (Tuesday)

For those of you staying in the PSR rooms, I've heard it can get cold in those rooms at night and I don't know if they have heaters or if the heaters work, so you may want to bring your sweats or a sleeping bag to use a blanekt just in case.

Per the NPS Morning Report as of this morning it is open with snow on the ground. I may check it out Thursday if I get in to PSR early enough. Too many trails...not enough time...

oooh...snow...
I'm getting my sliders welded on tomorrow morning....new steelies tonight...things are coming together. I can barely wait. I'll head straight to the PSR campsite. Anybody else thinking about doing a night cruise before we set up camp?

If you're driving in from Diego and leaving at 2:30PM its gonna take you longer than 5 hrs to get there. My guess in the Ryans Arrival Pool is that you'll pull in around 10:30PM.
I think there is a trail very close that we could run at night...Lake Hill Rd. ...but may be best for Fri. or Sat. night.

Looking at the map, hitting the 215 keeps my path in a straighter line since the 15 takes a detour before continuing north. I know that the I-15N moves very fast and that's the only place that seems like I would have a chance to hit traffic.
Lake hill Rd...is that the trail that goes up the canyon by Lookout Mountain? that trail on my map doesn't have a label.

Ok. I used to travel between SD and the High Desert (where the 15 and 395 intersect)...the 15 is WAY faster and even with traffic it's faster. The 215 sucks pretty much all the time. Also, there won't be any traffice on the 15 until about 4:30 or 5 on Friday. Even then, it's only for the last 4-5 miles before you hit the Cajon pass...where the traffic just disappears.

a little late night project for the trip: http://www.4runners.org/articles/platform
too bad i ain't 6'2" to enjoy it all!
i've been waiting to cut a piece of ply this way to have a nice, stable sleeping platform. i think this will definitely allow us to sleep better in the 4runner

For those of you going on the DV Panamint springs trip, and are staying at the lodge, there's a $15 off coupon:

(I believe it's only for the lodge..)
Sorry for the late posting...

I just had to share...
When Highway 14 turns into 395, about exactly 1/2 mile later
(just after an old gas station called Brady's Cafe) there will be a
dirt road on the right called Leliter. On your way to Death Valley,
look down that road 1/4 mile and the first house you see (closest to
Leliter and 395) is where i lived for 8 years. I really miss
that house....living out there with all the desert and mountains is pretty much why/how i got into off roading as a kid.
Also, many moons ago, my grandpa from Lancaster always took week-long off road trips at Death Valley in his International Scout and would come back with some of the best stories about places he explored.
I wish i could join you guys. Be safe and have fun.

hey guys,
some of us who had to leave early just arrived back from DV. wow, what an amazing trip! the group chemistry was awesome too. and not to mention, the potluck was quite a feast. if you ever go on a trip with expat, stand next to his grill---he cooks some mean chops!
unfortunately, i forgot my camera (i am kicking myself right now), but i know chiefiji, my neighbor and calrockx will post pics very soon. definitely the highlight of saturday's trip was finding some mud puddles at the higher elevation. who knew that in death valley, that in addition to desert terrain, you could see snow, rain, water (waterfall to be exact) and mud in a few hours!
this was definitely one of the best trips i've been to. thanks to all the trip organizers, trail leaders, etc, etc.
