CO - Red Cone Trail Run - Sat July 7th
Ok so Saturday July 7th we are running Red Cone! http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=9
We shall plan to meet at the Hall Valley Campground (The 1st one) in Hall Valley up Park county road at 11:00 am. Redcone is actually a side trail off of the Webster Pass Trail.
Take Highway 285 from Denver past Grant, then turn right on County Road 60. You will see signs to both Webster Pass and Red Cone at just over 5 miles. Meet at the first large camp ground (Handcart Gulch Campground) We will then turn right here and follow FSR 565 to the top.
**********
Also: Friday night July 6th - Troy and I are planning to camp at an old miners cabin up at the top of hall valley (This is the valley right next to webster pass). It can sleep up to 7 pretty well. This is a 1900's miners cabin that has been fixed up by our family but is on forest service land and is open to anyone. It has no amentities 'cept a roof. There is a chance we will encounter others up there so you will still need to bring tents (and sleeping bags of course).

So post up here if you are interested in joining us at the cabin Friday night!

Molly, Do you know if the trail is open all the way to the summit yet? I'm heading up there this weekend as wasn't sure. If you don't know, I'll give a "scouting report" when I get back. I'm otherwise booked the weekend of the 7th so i can't make the run.

Cade, I definately think you will run into snow this weekend and infact even on the 7th it might be questionable. I know it's been hot but the trip reports and updates i've seen over on CO4x4 are pretty intresting as far as how much snow is still up there. I'll be intrested to see what you guys find up there.

John, thanks for the beta.
Molly, I'm bringing the foxholer and the snow shovel so we'll see if we can start the process for ya! We've got a decent group of strong backs to do some huckin and chuckin.
I'm going either way too, so again, I'll post up with a scouting report. We'll be starting on the Montezuma side and plan on using the cone as a loop back from webster so I hope we can at least make the pass.

Reading this report http://www.traildamage.com/trails/report.php?id=350 It doesn't look bad.

Well as of Saturday around noon the gate on the Montezuma side of webster pass is still locked. We talked with a forest service emp. and he said it was due to a large snow drift just after the creek crossing and large meadow at the bottom of the north side switchbacks. We headed up Sts. John and were able to make it up to the tundra (after digging out two snow patches and piling rocks in front of the CLOSED trail that others had obviously used to bypass the snow!!!!) but there is a large stretch of road just before the connection to Deer creek that is covered in deep snow and would have taken too long for our group to dig out so we turned back there. (Again, obviously other people had just gone around the snow through somewhere around 250 to 300 yards of soggy tundra, but i was not willing to let my group go off trail! It looked real bad folks!) We saw other vehicles coming up deer creek and heading over to radical hill, but I think I saw them turn back, and I would assume there is a significant amount of snow on its' switchbacks. I think I also saw a vehicle on top of Red cone, but it could have been a 4wheeler, and it would definitly have had to come down via the south side of Webster which I would assume will have some drifts as well.
I really appreciate the moisture this late in the season, but it's starting to get in the way of my wheeling.

Oh yeah, don't let anything I said above even start to keep you from going. The hills are full of wildflowers and wildlife, even if you don't make it through your whole planned journey, what you do make will be worth it. That was our lesson learned this weekend.......

Due to my recent nasty nasty incident seen here:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f100.../#post50566507
(The front diff damage and tie rod damage, that is)
I might not be able to make it, I'm gonna try and check it out a little further. It's caved in pretty bad, but not leaking, and not hitting the ring gear. Not sure what I should do.
I'd still love to come, think the little trooper will survive? I'm just afraid that one small little ding will pop it for sure.
