Lol Ducky! I only scream to keep the driver awake and on the trail!

I don't care if there's snow down there just not on the freeway to and from....that wouldn't make me happy!

I'm ready for the mine. I have rubber boots and a new Maglight.

I can bring my set of FRS radios. I figure you're thinking for being in the mine? One trip a while back we had mixed results trying to use them for manual info relay from Truck to Truck.

Not to be overly cautious, and I have never been there so i haven't seen it, but do y'all know the mine to be safe, gas wise? Is there a way to check this, like through the forest service? Not trying to be a fly in the ointment, but I grew up in a mining/drilling family, and many people have died from undetected gases in mines. A few years ago in my hometown there was a horiffic event where 3 or 4 high school kids were exploring mines and all died when overcome by fumes.

Maybe we should take a canary, or beter yet...a cat!

I dunno... I just remember going in to the mines in that area as a kid... obviously theres always going to be concerns associated with waltzing into mines...

Im sure *IF* we decide to go in, and we come accross dead things its time to turn back...

Anyone got a canary, or a cat they dislike?

Or any geeky ppl have a working tricorder?

BTW anyone got a camcorder with super night shot? =D

Regarding going into mines...

Aside from the obvious issues of watching out for stuff that might fall on your head or completely collapse, make sure you've got backup lights. People who go caving as a hobby used to (and probably still do) carry 3 light sources so they've got backup. I think every person carried their own 3. Don't trust your set of batteries or the bulb to last. You could drop it and have a light break, etc. etc. Cavers usually wear hard-hats too - bash your head into the rock ceiling and it will hurt at the very least.

Make sure that someone knows where it is if you're going into it. If something did go wrong, time could be a lot more important than if you're just stuck out there or lost on the surface.

Sounds like an interesting trip, but I don't think my rig is up to the challenge of getting there without risk of damage.

Depends on what kind of damage your talking about...

We had a stock rig out there with no damage... other than maybe light pinstripping...

actually the most damage award goes to a non-stock rig, with a dented door and a slashed tire...

but as with any offroad trip we do... "milage may vary."

I was talking with FunRunner today about safety and I just had an idea...

With the voiced concerns about exploring this cave, I think it'd be a REAL good idea if we could confirm that at least TWO people in the outside world knew RIGHT where we were (I think Dukcy and I both have lat/long of the mine entrance), could be told (by cellphone) right when we start the walk up that hill, and set some time limit as to when they will be contacted again.

Each of those folks should have the other's phone number or access info.

If we sat down and thought "maturely" about it (hah!) I think we'd all agree that we were "not real smart" walking in there kinda' haphazzardly last time. It's one thing to lose someone as old as I am , but I think we need to be more careful next time.

Whatcha' all think?

Tie winch cable to victim.... er, I mean first person going in, and then when the cable stops moving start pulling back with the winch.

On second thought, don't. It could get a little messy...

I think it's a good Idea to talk about it ,

Maybe, when we get up to that lake for lunch, we can discuss all together how to handle it...

My original idea was to maybe do it in groups or something, not all together, that way one group is outside at all times...

Depending on how long it takes to get everyone to the lake, we might not have time....

And *if* this is a successful run, remember my GPS shows at least 3 mines in the vacinity...

(I wish I could find a missile silo, but thats even more dangerous than a mine)

Well, this is what I'd suggest. Our main priority will be doing the trail run. We'll head up to the lake, have lunch, then head back down, and depending on the time and what people's schedule are, try to hit a different mine from what we did the last time.

I agree that we were a tinge foolish the last time, but think we turned around in an appropriate amount of time. We can discuss what to do if/when we find one of the other mines. I don't think any of us plan on going real deep, mostly just poke our noses in a little ways and turn around. It all starts to look the same after a couple minutes anyways.
