CA Sierras 9-10 Oct

Sorry had to change by a week for logistics on my side!

Lets try again, as I didn't get any response earlier.

I would like to do the Sierras 9-10 Oct. I am looking at south of the Yosemite, trails like Bald Mountain and SHut Eye Peak and some other trails in the area. Those of you interested please post. I will put together a list of suggested trails. Trails uggestions in that area always welcome.

The weather should still be OK, not cold or snowy, locals please confirm. Also people that know good camping spots please post. I might camp this time, or will stay closeby.

checking with the boss now, but it sounds good to me. Definitely be a camp/stay trip. Too far for a day trip for me!

Edit: Change that to "hell yes". She says I can go!

Bald Mountain is on the other side of Owens Valley though right?

That would make it in the White Mountains I think.

Nerd.

And I'll keep my fingers crossed on this one.

There are some good group camp sites at Badger Flat which is very near the Red Mountain OHV area and not too far from Bald Mountain. I did Strawberry Lake with Esprit de Four a couple years back and did Bald Mountain myself afterwards. I've been back to Bald Mountain once since then. Pretty cool and not too difficult. Beautiful vista from the top. I stayed at Huntington Lake that time since it was really a fishing trip.

Here's a link to pics and my writeup on the ED4 trip in 2001.

I'd like to do Strawberryand Bald Mountain again sometime, and check out Brewer and some of the other trails.

Heres' a link to more info on the area:

Here's a good trail map of the Dinkey Creek Wilderness Area as well as the Red Mountain OHV area. I know first hand that Bald Mountain is pretty mild. There is a way to the top for nearly everyone. Strawberry creek was what I would call moderate. You'll need a small lift and possibly sliders if you want to get all the way to the lake. I did most of the trail before having to turn back. Can't remember why. I think it was a clearance issue. I had no lift at the time. I also did part of the Mirror Lake trail before it got too gnarly for me. The Ed4 jeepers I was with were fairly hardcore and kept going. Up can see the picturs on my website using the link in my previous post.

Hmmm....I might look into this one.
Hey Adam, do you think my truck would do ok up there? As long as it's not snowing it sounds like it shouldn't be too challenging, but since you've run it before maybe you could let me know....I'd hate to get out there and hold anyone back or find out I can't climb anything :pat:

Adam,
Thanks for all the info, seems like you have the most "local" knowledge of the trails and campgrounds. I read somewhere on 4x4wire that they can close some of the trails after AUgust to protect them, not sure??? I will try to call the Forest service tomorrow and find out what the real scoop is.

I would love to do Bald Mountain and SHut Eye PEak, but not sure if we can do both and some other trails on one weekend. Both seem to be rated easy to moderate, pending where you read. I wouldn't be able to do anything more than moderate, as my lil' mall queen is still a bit low (at least a better than stock, but still )

Maybe just do one area this time.

Spoke with Rangers and FOrest management, they only expect snow late Oct /Nov, so the trails, etc will be open unless something strange happens. SO from that perspective it is a go.

I will get the maps from them and post them here. We can the finalize trails and campsite.

Who will be going??? Please post here.
So far I have:

There's a whole plethora of trails to the east of Bald Mtn.

A few years back my gf and I explored a bit of the area near Sagehen peak. Those were awesome, but pretty dusty.

At one point, while driving along a dirt track about 5 ft up on the bank of a stream, the rear passenger tire lost traction and we damn near went in. I say this only to emphasize the narrow roads in some of those back areas.

I really want to get back there and explore. No crawling (not even rocks) as far as I know, but some really cool places that overlook canyons and the like.

The Tom Harrison Mammoth High Country map has a good overview of the area I think.

I'm going to have to drop to a "probably not" with the date change, Bulldog. The boss tells me we have a wedding to go to the weekend of the 10th.

sorry 'bout that. I suck. I'll keep working on her, though.

Is it your wedding and she didn't tell you J/K
Well, it looks like I will be changing back to the 2-3rd again. Can you do it then? Work and my "boss" keeps messing up my schedule.

What campgrounds do you guys want to use? Badger flat or closer to one of the lakes? I will hopefully get the maps next week, to do some planning.

I'm still in, but it's a 5 hour drive to badger flat campground (if that's the area we're shooting for) from Sac, so I'm definitely staying in the area.

Don't worry about training the boss... Bliksem already knows how to camp! It's in his furry little genes!

Ok, I'll see if we need to book Badger Flat campground. Lets meet there Saturday morning. How late can you make it, Scott?

Unfortunately, Bliksem is not the boss it is the other boss But we should still do a BBQ Saturday night.

I got the forest map and some other maps and GPS, so we can do Bald Mountain and some other trails. Maybe Shuteye peak as well, but lets see how we do for time on Saturday.
