Back to basics...

Hi All,
Being a newbie, I would like to hear what the group would have on hand in their rigs when 4wheelin'. What are the basics and must haves? I'm sure this is posted somewhere here but it's hard to search for.

Thanks....

Hmmm... a shovel, clothes you can get muddy in, and the promise of beer to all friends who help you get out of jams? Seriously though, i keep all sorts of stuff handy. Tie downs, shovel, tow rope, air compressor, blanket (in case you get stuck by yourlsef in the cold), Hatchet, tire plug kit, jumper cables, tire iron, big flashlite, and a bolt cutter (more for fun than anything) Not that you need all this crap, i just happin to be anal retentive when it comes to hoarding stuff in my vehicle and then bitching about how much room it takes up .

I thought I was the only one who carried bolt cutters around in my 4runner. When people see them, they think I am in the crime business. I too, carry all the things mentioned above as well as a couple pairs of leather gloves, a complete set of tools, and a gps. The gps can get you out of some very bad situations. I also carry a can of lysol incase some wise guy thinks it's funny to fart on one of my seats.

Oh, I also carry around a box of heavy duty contractor garbage bags. Sounds kind of strange, but you wouldn't believe how often they come in handy.

No, you arent the only one with the bolt cutters. I find that they come in very handy for 'ahem' barrowing road signs. And i got the set of tools too, forgot to mention them. I would keep gloves, but i dont have a winch and im not afraid to get a few scratches getting my firewood. As for the lysol and the garbage bags.... i'll just take your word for it (sounds an awfull lot like like the supplies for transporting dead bodies if you ask me)

Thanks... would a "come-along" be worth having? It might be a slow way out of a jam but it should work. It might even help with the sign posts!!

Don't forget about (the most dangerous jack in the world). The tried and true High Lift. You can use those for almost anything. Even a winch with around a 6000 lb. rating.

I needed one to bend my frame after I hit a tree..... After that, I'll never go without one

HA HA.. You are right it does kind of sound like that. Good thing I keep all that stuff covered up with a blanket (one that actually has a few blood stains on it to be honest).

have a good supply of x-tra parts like U joints and things like that.

also, a ratchet strap saved me one day when the rear spring hanger broke. I used it to tie the axle in place for the 3 hour ride home. really fun with a welded rear diff...

JB Weld, I carry that stuff to use on oil pans. it really sucks when a rock knocks a hole in yours. Just use the JB Weld to patch it together and fill her up. Almost as good as new.
Tire repair kit, all I can say is that a flat tire sucks...
Can of starting fliud, if you're a moron like me, and pop beads off wheels. You can use the starting fluid to reseat the bead. But be careful!!!
