Arizona- Desoto Mine Trail Run: CHANGED DATE- 01 NOV 03
CHANGED THE DATE TO 01 NOV 03
Trail Rating: 3.5- Location: DeSoto Mine Trail
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trip Leader: The SloYota Trip Date: 01 Nov, 2003
When: Meet at 9:15 AM, Departing at 9:30 AM
Where: Mayer, AZ. at the Circle K
Est. Length: All Day CB Channel: 4
Hey AZ Wheeler's! It's been a year- time to go again!
This is an open invite to all makes/models-
Last year's TRIP was a "bit" rainy- we'll hope for better weather.
Here's an opportunity to see some of the really remote back country between Senator Hwy and the main Crown King road. It's a roller coaster ride- near Battle Flat, one of the major battles between Miners and Apache's in the 1864 Indian Wars. It features one short section of boulder infested creek bed- not huge stuff, 12" to 24" loose creek bed stuff, steep, loose hill climbs, and some pucker power off-camber stuff. The trail is over 12 miles long, and will take well over 3 hours at the best possible pace. The trail is listed as difficult in the Charles A. Well's book of AZ Trails, but is not EVEN as difficult as Martinez Canyon. The majority of the trail is a two track thru pines, pinyon/juniper and scrub oak/manzanita brush country.
I will require vehicles to have at least a rear locker and a minimun of 2" of lift and 32" tires. Rock sliders are RECOMMENDED. These requirements will help us all to have a safe, trouble free trip.
I'd like to limit the total to 10 or 12 vehicles.
Plan on meeting at the Circle-K (they have gas pumps) in Mayer, AZ. on Hwy 69 approx. 10 or 12 miles west of the Cordes Jnct. interchange on I-17 at 9:15 AM. We'll be taking the Goodwin Road to the Senator Hwy, then to the trail head off FS Road 89. about 4 miles south on the Senator Hwy. Bring a lunch and plenty of water!!! It should be a nice cool trip-
I'll be monitoring CB channel 4

MNBoy, you could probably make it. Prolly scrape some here and there by the looks of the pictures.

I also don't have sliders but by this point in my trip I'm guessing more damage won't matter. I'm not completely sure I could make it as my dance card is filling up fast, but if you don't mind babysitting my tire-challenged truck I might try.

In the past, a stock TJ has been able to get thru w/ only a tug or two, so we'll get ya thru w/ no problem! The tire requirement helps w/ keeping diff hangs to a minimum- most of the creek bed is loose stuff vs. the solid rock shelves like Moab

Hello,
BajaTaco sent me here.
I would like to make this trip with you.
I friend and I will be driving from San Diego (just one 4Runner).
My 4Runner is not as capable as the ones I see on the Avatars, but we will be OK.
~2.5+" lift, back lockers, and sliders.
Thanks,
-JACK

I'd have to agree with sschaefer3 on Martinez. I just ran that trail a few weeks ago and I'd have to say that it would take a lot to top that trail. But I'll give Desoto a chance, see ya'll Nov. 1st.

Hey Brig- glad to have ya come along!
The DeSoto Mine trail is no where near as difficult as the Martinez Canyon trail- but it's fun none the less. It will get ya offcamber more than the Martinez Canyon trail tho-
