i found a 1991 toyota 4x4 5 speed but he says it has a lower end knock, but you cant hear it when at idle it has 256xxx miles on it and some spots of rust. but im thinking its a timing chain or maybe a exhaust leak. he says it a 7 on a scale form 1-10. Could this be a simple fix. or a big hassle.. any other thing it could be? thanks for any info.

 

You might tell us just how much this is gonna cost to start.

used engine between $500 to $1000 depending on local market

rebuild and machining could run $1200 and up depending on just what you need and how much you do.

 

Have you even seen it yet in person?, driven it?.
A knock is pretty distinctive sounding. Your asking a broad question.
If possibly having to tear it down and rebuild it is a big hassle to you, then pass on it. By the way how much is he asking?

 

Kelley Blue Book says a 1992 4wd in "fair" condition (some rust spots, but otherwise safe running condition) is around $1,200. But this one is not in safe running condition, and it might take $500 to $1200 to get it there. IF the knock is the only problem.

So if the price is Free, AND he'll tow it to your place for you, then you can take a chance on it and it may come out a wash. Or not.

Personally, I'd spend that kind of money on my truck because a) it's a known quantity and b) I really like it. But spending $1200 to repair someone else's 20-yr old truck?

 

Sorry thought i put that in there he wonts 1800 bottom dollar and i have two 22r-e motors on my porch. and i have yet to go look at it just waiting on yall opinon to see if it is worth getting. and thanks for the KBB value. to me i'd think a rod knock you could hear it at any rpm from the ones i heard.

 

KBB means nothing outside of a dealer showroom, and does not reflect the market and going rate for a truck. I wouldn't spend 1800 on a truck that needs an engine unless they are either extremely hard to come by in your area or it's absolutely mint. A toyota pickup is about a grand worth of parts to me. I'd pay a grand for the right truck, stuff a 500 dollar used engine in it and have a runner. 1800 is a no go though on a 91.

 

i understand that KBB doesnt mean much but some people think that there vehicle is worth alot but when you tell them KBB vaule is less then what there asking for theyll lower there price. and i dont plan on paying 1800 for it i know it anit worth that. im just trying to get a better toyota then my 1980 4x4 witch is in BAD shape the frame acts as a extra leaf spring. lol

 

pictures of this truck would help and kbb is a rip off my dad use to be a dealer and thats always over priced even in the worse or best condition ... it really comes down to how much $ u have to throw away and what its worth to you other wise its just a old beat around truck

he says the tires are in good condition and two new rears stock wheels but he ant answering my questions so this is a dead end im gonna try to go look at it tomorrow hopefuly if the dude answers my call. and go form there

 

I bought mine for $1700, with a dead motor. Cracked block. But I knew the condition of everything else, so $1200 later, I had a perfect (for me) truck. If I hadn't known the condition of everything else, there's no way I'd have paid that. Maybe $1000. So it's all up to you... see how it sounds, it might not be a rod. Could be a cheap fix, could be a little more involved. Good luck!

 

well all know toyota owners ask gold for there trucks even in crap condition, 1800 is his bottom dollar needing a motor? throw some crack rocks in his face ang give him 800

 

I have had a knock on my truck for over 2 years, it has never gotten worse. I redline it whenever I drive it, I used to have a long block for it when it decided to go but never has, so I sold the long block since I don't DD it anymore.
I can't hear mine at an idle, when I kill the #1 spark plug it goes away, when I first got it I rolled in new bearings and the #1 bearing was toast, the crank looked OK but the rod cap was all pitted and scratched, it was within specs with plastigauge but the knock came back within a week. That's when I bought the long block and said screw it drive it till it blows, still going strong.

There is a video in my build where I am rock crawling and you can hear the knock.
