What are 1st Gen Trucks worth?
So I have personal reasons for asking... basically I have been trying to sell my 1st gen for 4 months now....have not had one person even look at it....lots of calls but they laugh when I tell them how much. Am I asking too much? I kept track of the build cost and I am asking way way less than what it cost for parts and paint. Have I just built a rig that only certain people want? Looking for opinions...
My rig is an 81 pickup that I built from the ground up using a frame, cab, box, doors which had zero rust... every single part was blasted, PORed, painted or powder coated. Painted it, lots and lots of goodies, and put a 400 HP V8 under the hood along with built axles and such. Lifted and on 35s...
What do you guys think a rig like that would be worth.

They never are worth what you have in them.
What someone is willing to pay depends how bad they think they want that truck.
*** Remember you asked***
So what you have is a nice 81 body and frame I might go as High as $1500.00 being completely serious .
Myself I have no need of all the junk you put on this vehicle In fact that reduces the price .
It would be worth more if 100% stock to some people.
You have a truck built for a very select group of buyers .

Thats a nice rig you got there for sure, but the market for that exact truck is very limited and appeals to a select few, the problem is finding that certain buyer who has the same tastes and wants, and who has the cash! You may want to try ebay with a reserve, it will be seen by lots of people and may increase your odds of a sale.
As already mentioned the nice stock examples of 1st gens seem to do pretty good and personally is what I look for and collect....Good luck, its definatly a cool truck!

As said you never get back what you have into them
I have a lot into my truck but I know I will be lucky to get a third of that out of it..
your truck lookd nice but is too high suspensionwise from what people want and it still needs a few things to be done.
most people that do a vehicle project do so out of love of the project not a profit.

Personally, based on what i have seen of your truck I'd probably be willing to pay you no more than $9,000 if it were to have a built 22R in it. With the Chevy in it, you'd only get about $7,000 from me because I would have to spend at least $2,000 to put a 22R in it. Part of the allure of these trucks is the efficiency and reliability of the 22R.
Currently, I'm building a 1983 Shortbed pickup from the ground up - see my build thread. No offense to you, but I plan on building my truck even better than your's, but still keep in mind how nice your truck is. I'm easily into it for over $14,000 (including the price of the truck) and I haven't even paid for my roughly $2,600 bed from Toyota Fiberglass, paint, body work and all kinds of odds and ins. When everything is said and done I'll probably be into it for around $20,000 and a boat load of my time (I've done all the work on it myself). When it is all said and done I'll have one of the best first gen pickups in existence. Now what will it be worth?? In theory, at least $20,000 but that is what it is worth to me. Finding somebody to pay that would be nearly impossible. Realistically, I could probably throw it on eBay and expect to get around $10,000. It also helps that I have the whole restoration documented on Yotatech with pictures and receipts.
Bottom line, it's not worth to others what it is worth to you because they don't see the time and money that you have put into it. They just see a 30+ year old truck that MSRP'ed for about $9,000 new. And the market for these trucks is such and small specialty market and the majority of the people in the market just want to buy them for trail rigs to trash - they don't want to spend $15,000 on a truck that they plan on beating the crap out of.

Beautiful truck to be sure but I'm right along with their opinions. The Chevy V8 (although parts are cheap and plentiful) is kind of a downer although I bet it runs like a mofo lol.
Its your project man. I would be proud to have something like that in my garage especially if you're doing it yourself. Very well done. You will never get out of it what you put in and if you're really sure about getting out of the hobby be prepared to hurt a little.
I think 1500 is pretty low though imo. I would go for the 6-7k range but you're going to have to wait for a cash buyer. No bank in the world will put a loan on your truck. Cash isn't plentiful in many areas these days so patience will be your virtue.

I've seen that truck's build thread..and man is it awesome! But that alone isn't enough to sell somebody on it. To a Toyota collector/enthusiast, they're buying 1. A flawless, perfect Toyota body/suspension/interior and 2. A V8 to sell off. If the truck had the 22r, it would be worth more. Also, I think if it wasn't SO perfect, and even had the V8, it would sell quicker because guys like romping trucks they don't feel soo bad for getting dirty.
I'd pay 7-8k, just for the body work alone, but the V8, though custom, brings it down. I'd ask 10k and say it's negotiable because that's exactly what folks will do..try and knock it down to that 7-8k. Good luck with the sale! It was an amazing build thread to read..

Folks I appreciate the feedback you have confirmed mostly what I was already thinking. Sometimes perspective is what you need right. For those with comments on the craftsmanship thank you... I did do most of the work myself and enjoyed the build as much as I enjoy driving it now BTW. I think the problem is I enjoy the build more... its time to get a different project.

Correct just in Nova Scotia....much more limited market. I was going to post it here but im trying to figure out what this thing is really worth ... clearly after dumping so much into it I'm not selling it for 1500 and even 6-7000 seems a little low.
Somebody suggested Ebay maybe I will see there with a reserve set how high the offers go an see from there. At a certain price I would have more fun keeping it and just driving the hell out it ... I was built to take some torture.

You'd have to be crazy to buy that truck planning to pull the v8 out and return it to a 22r. If that's your plan, better off finding a different truck. Sure theV8 limits the market, but it will still be a plus to someone. I can see getting 8/9k for that truck. Anyone laughing at a price like that is just dreaming and is butt hurt they can't afford it.

I get what you are saying KAWAZX636 for sure.... I drove around with my 22r for ever and with the larger tires .. it sucked on the highway and in some offroad cases it was under powered...then again I have always enjoyed mashing the peddle
A different gear ratio may have helped... either way your point is this truck is for the right person.... clearly not for someone who wants to beat it in the woods and not for a period correct museum piece either.
So all the comments are cool what I am looing for is what would you pay regardless of if you want to buy it... I'm trying to figure out what the right price is and then I need to decide if I can accept that loss or just drive it.
So yes my price is high but if there are any body people/paint people if you remove the V8 from the equation to get the body looking like that I believe paint and man hours it was around 7 Grand alone... mind you I am including the cost of shipping a body up from California since there are none left here in Canada except ones that have been hacked up or have no floors...we have too much salt.
Anyway so back to my question what would you pay? Is say 15,000 too much? What if it had a 22R in it? Im sure I could do that if I wanted to if it was worth it... oh but then with the 35s it would do maybe 50 on the highway
Last I realize these are opinions... I not offended in anyway just gathering data that's all.

I can do 75 on the freeway with my 22r and 35s with 4.88s no problem.
My point wasn't that the 22r isn't a fine motor for the truck, it was that you can't devalue the truck just because you want a 22r, not a v8. If you don't want a v8 then the truck isn't for you. It would cost you more to swap the motor than to just find a clean stock truck.
The right guy who wants to be able to roast 35s is out there. Probably a military vet with some cash, no wifey and no time to build it themselves. Just gotta find your guy.

I can understand the building been there done that repeat way to often. My self I can`t part with mine and most often give them away after a year or 2 of driving.
Knowing full well I could not even come close to just parts so I just give them away to someone who wants it really bad.
To me the reward is in the using of the vehicle in the manor it was built for.
I did not meant to insult you just giving a honest answer.
i am sure given enough time some one will fall in love and you might be able to only lose a few thousand.
Good Luck
