the 2.4l only came in the 2wd models as far as i know. The 2.7 came in the 4x4 models and is a very good motor. It has a timing chain that needs very little to no maintenance. my old tacoma with the 2.7 ran like a champ at 165K when i traded her in.

what he said......
the only problems with the 3rz (2.7) is the earlier models have problems with cracking exhaust manifolds, but that problem is easily fixed with the mini header from a newer 2.7 (and pretty cheap too). The 2.4(2rz) and the 2.7(3rz) are basically the same motor, the 2.7 is the stroked version, and has balance shafts in it.
If your talking about the differences between 2.4 (22re) and 2.7 (3rz), the 2.7 is hands down better. It has dohc's, and has a lot more power, no timing chain problems, 50 more hp, the engine really likes to be rev'd, it's a great little truck motor, even in my heavy sob 4runner the 2.7 can keep up and get it moving (be it slow though).

I agree too.
I have 155k on my 2.7 and it runs fantastic, feels like it is still brand new. When I bought it, with 104k, it had a cracked exhaust manifold, but that has been the only problem with it.
This past weekend I cleaned out the TB, and now it idles much smoother.

i have the 2.4 i have only had to adjust valves 1 time and replaced water pump thats it with 130k and the last 60k are all off road miles i have Downey ceramic header with flow master i think it sounds good also has throttle body spacer crank pulley and some other mods good little motor if you don't need 4x4 the bad-- without the 488 gears its slow as hell but so is the 2.7 and i run 33 12.5 15 tires so...
i towed a quad and a dirtbike with her when i had 32 10.5 tires and 410 gearing and it made it but no fun
