Parting out advice and questions

I have a cab and frame from an 85 4runner and am looking to build it into an in town dd and decent trail machine. I also have a 98 4runner 3rz 4x4 and an 82 pickup 4x4 w/all pro and 5.29 gears in the axles on 33".

The way I look at it I have 2 options

1. Drop the 82 to stock and take the suspension, axles, and tires and install them on the 85. Then Take the engine and tranny out of the 98 4runner and put it all together with the adapter for the w59 to make it a pass. drop. Part out the rest of the 4runner and keep the 82 as a parts getter.

2. Sell the 82 and 98 and hopefully get enough to buy everything.

If I were to part out a 4runner is there anyone who has done a 3rd gen 4runner part out? I have never done a part out on a vehicle before honestly and I know that I'm taking the biggest money makers for my own use.

sounds like you've already go a plan with option #1. with option #2 you could potentially get some good coin back to invest in the 85, but you're out one more rig that drives while you're building. not knowing what condition either rig is in, it's hard to say, but i would think the 98 could fetch over $5k in stock form. if the rig is beat, and you don't think you will get much $ for it as opposed to buying a wrecked rig for the drivetrain, then that's your decision. either way, sounds like you'll be having a pretty badass rig once it's done.

as for parting out, i've never done it, but seen many do it. usually you take what you want, put up an ad, then pull parts for people until you're tired of doing that. then it seems people either sell the rest as a whole or cut the rig up and take it to the scrap yard for the pennies they'll give you.

good luck

One of the reasons I might be able to sell the 98 for parts is because from what I understand the 3.0 diesel fits in the 3rz mounts with a spacer.

The 98 is in very good condition for its age. Paint is a little faded on the roof and there's some scratches on the clearcoat but mechanically she's awesome....never done anything more than a clutch and brake pads...oh and I did a full exhaust upgrade with cai. New rims and tires too.

You can possibly get more by parting it out. I would suggest that you sell the heavy and large items locally. Shipping can get expensive on items like tranny and motor. Locally for the most part you are just going to sell the common items. When those are sold, you are going to have a large hulk of junk sitting around and still alot of good parts left but those are only going to sell on something like this site or other Toyota sites for enthusiast like us that want or need the odd ball parts that the common driver would never replace or upgrade.

Then you got to make time to pull those parts and get them in the mail and hope you have a smooth transaction and a satisfied customer. Not saying parting is a bad thing. It is something I have done on a truck that was just beyond fixing. But still the parts are used and there is no guarantee that the part is up to the customers expectation. There are more then a few threads where their is a disgruntled buyer on here and it is something I personally dont want to get known for is selling a bad part.

Something like a mudflap, bumper bracket would be ok, but a relay or mechanical item I probably wouldnt want to if it was me.

I really dont know what all the hot items that are wanted for a 3rd gen and how familiar are you with getting the parts out in question? Are you going to be able to let it sit at your location for a period of time until the parts are gone?

Like I said earlier, I have parted a couple of trucks and only the excess that I didnt need, I have a nice stash of parts and dont let any good part go to waste. It is done quite a bit but did want to try and give you some advice from someone who has experience in it. I am glad that there are parts here that if I need, someone has them and I have bought parts from members off of here, but I also only buy things I know that cant be bad and if I do buy something like a relay or a part that can fail, I only buy from a select few. Hope this helps with your decision and gives you a better understanding.

I decided against the part out as it would ruin a perfectly good vehicle.

I've thought about it but I'm not so sure that it would match up right with the all pro suspension? I have never been around a SAS at all and seeing in person would help a lot with that kind of project
