Looking at a 92 Toyota Pickup, what to check for.

1992 Toyota Pickup 4x4 V6, manual.

I maybe trading my 1996 VW Golf GTI VR6, for this pickup. What are common faults with the truck, what fails often.

Owner's AD:
"92 toyota pickup, great truck, starts every time. brand new winter tires. ($700) also still have the summers. roll bars are not on, will come with the truck though. only problem is e brake is broken. standard 4x4. 297000 km"

Standard transmission with no e-brake, thats got to be tough on the transmission. Listen for ANY grinding in the transmission (in any gear). Make sure both hubs lock and the 4x4 hi/lo works. That's about all i can think of right now. Maybe check to see if A/C works.

Does it have the 4 or 6 cylinder?

Also, welcome to YT!

Run the VIN and see if the mileage is within range.
Pass the VIN to toyota as see if the timing belt has been changed recently.
Look for the standard used vehicle stuff, rusted frame, busted shocks/springs,
Looks like the back-end is sagging pretty good.
A replaced fender is a good indicator of a fender bender, look for a crumpled inner fender and other damage.

No e-brake is not a deal breaker, a new cable is ~$120 from NAPA or anywhere else.

rust, on the rear of the frame where the exhaust hangers are welded. That whole bar can rust through. rust on the cab corners or rockers. or on the frame near the leaf mounts.
Check for high idle, or fluctuating idle!
some problems i had!
x2 on the timing chain, and maybe check if the head gasket was done too!

Good points, both fenders have been replaced.

thanks. Do the HG fail often in this motor? how are cost of motor parts. (Belts, chains, water pumps, seals, ETC.)

on my car the water pump is $50 and $120 respectably. (Main and AUX.)

maintenance parts are cheap, can the same be said for this truck?

Click and read. This is basically the best response ever given to the question you're asking. Tells you about all the systems and typical fail points.

The head gaskets have been a particularly notable fail point for the v6 motor.

If it has manual hubs, just turn them until they are in the locked position. It's like a little dial.

It's not a big deal if they don't turn, it just means you'll have to rebuild them. If they do turn, see if you can take it to a dirt road and pop it in $4x4. If it doesn't have a dial like this on the front wheels, it probably has automatic disengaging differential (or A.D.D). More importantly check the frame to make sure it's clean.

Put it in 4wd, the 4wd light on the dash should light up.
Try 4Lo as well.

Red face

I doubt the e-brake working is as simple as a cable if it is has not worked in a while by now the bell cranks are seized in the brackets.

Then while you have it all apart may as well replace the rear brakes.

Looking at a new vehicle take it for a ride see how it drives in general. does it shake above 25 mph does it pull left or right

Strange wear patterns on the tires.

4 high and low both work and both the transfer case and transmission shift smooth.
ask why the different colored fenders.

The overall condition under the hood while it does not need to be squeaky clean look for hacked wiring fluid leaks.

Mice and squirrel nests

just look for things that look out of place and wrong.

Take a friend along to keep telling you your crazy to buy this truck and keep picking out the little imperfections .

Good luck
