Buying a Used 22RE

Hey Guys,

I want to make sure I'm not completely crazy. I'm trying to save cash and the 22RE seems to be so much of the 350 small block of the 4 cylinder world that I don't think much can go wrong.

I'm looking to buy the motor pictured below for $400. The head has been hot tanked but I'm not sure the block or head has been decked. The guy is including a full set of gaskets and says the engine was running perfectly when it was pulled. It has a new timing set and will come without the head bolted down so that I can be sure the new gasket is placed properly.

I realize I may be getting myself into more trouble than a new motor would cause but the fact that the motor only has 130K on it and the bottom end is sound is a good enough start for me. Let me know your thoughts.

"engine was running perfectly when it was pulled" Then why in the heck would someone pull the head let alone pull the whole motor? I don't get it. Pull the head to change timing chain? Pull the motor to junk the truck?

Yeah I was curious about that as well. I believe the truck was junked or the guy was doing a 350 swap. I will find out about that.

EDIT: Correct. It was in a wrecked truck that the guy was parting out to use parts in his crawler

Building one will not cost you a bunch just start at the beganing , strip it to bare block send it to the machine shop and rebuild it , that way you will know that it 100% and it should give ya quite few years/miles of trouble free driveing.

Yeah. Probably the best route. I've been talking to a local rebuilder that my buddy has used on multiple occasions. Might as well go get the process started. I just want a running engine. I'm not looking to add a bunch of special after market parts or anything. Thanks.

Hope that 4x4 engine stand is actually hooked to something.
Those blocks look like they could go at anytime, just thinking about it makes my feet hurt

Where did you find that at? I am looking for a good motor to rebuild so I can drop it in my truck over a weekend so I can minimize down time. I was contacted by a guy from craigslist a few hours ago that says he has a 22re with the head off, new gasket set and he says it has a Engnbldr head with 1500 miles on it for $350. Says that he sold the truck so he doesnt need it, just wondering if its the same guy.

Probably not the same guy. He's in Salem. He was trying to get even more than $400 but I talked him down. He's pretty proud of it, I doubt he would forget to mention it has an engnbldr head. That sounds like a sick deal you found.

That's kind of my plan is that I would like to just get my truck running. But at the same time it's my recreation rig, not my DD, so there's no real reason to rush getting it back on the road. Plus, I don't have to pay insurance money on it right now

Yeah, I dont know where this guy is yet, we have only had contact over a couple emails, it does sound like a good deal but at the same time it kinda sounds too good you know. I just put a want ad on craigslist and got like 5 emails within an hour, most seem pretty decent so far.

What kind of offers? Engines that are already pulled or engines that have yet to be pulled?

At this point after thinking it through further, the only way I'll buy a used engine is if I witnessed it running in the seller's truck. I don't want to have some dick sell me a "running" engine and then spend a good chunk of my time installing it only to find out it has a knock or terrible compression.

I have had both, just one that is still in the truck and running, he told me that I can come drive it even but didn't give me a price yet. Another is from a small shop in SE Portland that is from a Celica and even comes with the trans for $350 that he says has 158K and will give me a 30 day warranty on it. The engine in my truck runs but has a knock when first started, I rolled in some new bearings when I first got it, but it was too late, it also burns a fair amount of oil. I was looking for either a motor to strip down and rebuild or throw in the truck to drive and rebuild my current one.

I already have an entire set up that just needs to be rebuilt. I was just being lazy. What's the status on yours?

Who'd you use for your machine work? Did you do the assembly yourself? I'm trying to get a feel for things to look out for. I've read re-build threads but just curious what you did since you're close by

Did you have the shop assemble the bottom end for you or anything? My local shop has a deal where they will bore/hone the cylinders and set you up with a new set of rings/pistons/rods/bearings (matching the pistons to a specific cylinder) and then assemble the bottom end. The bottom end is the part I really don't want to mess with. I can figure out how to put timing sets, rear main seal, timing set and timing cover and all the accessories back on. And as long as I know the recommend torque sequence for the head I'll be fine.

Is that extra from just a normal bore/hone?
