1986 Toyota Turbo Pickup. Buy or not to buy?

Hey there,
I am new to posting on here. I have done a lot of reading on here, but I have never actually made an account until now.

Anyway, I have always wanted an old Toyota just to cruse around town in and to have a little fun. I found one I think I might be interested in. It's a 1986 Toyota Pickup Turbo, 85000 miles on the "rebuilt" motor, slight oil leak and a short in the low beam headlight switch. I'm no expert but it all sounds fixable to me. The interior looks to be in good shape, and the rust seems to be minimal. Wants 2800 but I was thinking more like 2300 or 2400.

I have a few friends who have trucks anywhere from 1985-1991 and they all swear by them.

But I would really love to hear some opinions on this particular model. I have read a few threads about this, but some fresh opinions are always good.
So really, I just want to know if it would be better for me to wait for something else to come along or to seriously consider buying this. Taking into consideration reliability, value, and of course cool factor.

Thanks for reading my novel ( :

man... everytime i see one of those i drool a little. I've always wanted a turbo p/u. BUT i'd rather it be a first gen or diesel.
I guess i could turbo my first gen? but carburation is so simple and apoc proof... :/

it looks to be in good order, if i had the chance i'd love to get a hold of one of these if only for the old school turbo parts. throw some bearings on and update the tech a little and you'd have yourself a peppy and reliable horse for years to come.

Hi and welcome to the forums. The truck looks pretty decent, any pictures of the frame you can get? $2800 is not bad, bet he's willing to haggle, hope you get it.

Thanks for the input and warm welcome. I love good strong car forms, and this must be one of the strongest I've seen. Anyway, I will be taking a look at the truck tomorrow, should I look for anything specific on the frame? Besides any major rust and stuff like that?
I've never shopped for something this old, or in this climate (cold and snowy).

Not a bad looking truck these turbo set ups don`t really give you all that much horsepower considering your starting with a little over 100.

I have bought 3 of these trucks in a running condition I got all 3 for less then $3000.00

The turbo plumbing hoses are pretty much make and fabricate your own.

A stock 3.4 has lots more horse power .

I would not let a 22RTEC influence a decision to buy a vehicle if the rest of the vehicle needs lots of work.

Happy hunting!!

I'd do it. And drive it like a big rig. Babby it. ha and most importantly....if you wheel it. Get some armor on it first!! lol

Yeah, I figured a turbo truck from the eighties probably was not going to be a powerhouse. But on the other hand, I found a nice 84 but I feel like the stock horses on that was super low to start with. Not to mention it was lifted and has bigger tires. It sure did look sweet though. I do want to be able to throw something in the back from time to time and drive up a hill you know? Not like a piano or anything, but still. Am I wrong in thinking this?
