solid axles for SAS
since i can't find an 85 truck i am going to buy a late 80's early 90's model 2WD extended cab and do a SAS. so if you guys know where i can buy the front and rear axles let me know please. if you need my cell, pm me and i will send it to ya. i think the 85 truck is a myth.

Sorry you cant find one man... that sucks.
I'm pretty sure I have a rear axle, depending on if you want a SA rear or IFS rear (I think I have both...)
I also have most of a SA for up front.... I know I have the housing and knuckles, but I dont think I have the spindles. If you're looking for a complete one, I know I dont have that, but I did see one for sale a while back: http://groups.google.com/group/rockc...6ae4c64577c96c
Contact him, he usually has one lying around for sale (be it posted or not...)

Should have let me know you were looking before I moved all this junk to NY. I got enough parts to build 4 solid front axles. Including spindes for about 8 axles! (the price of which just went up since Cory is short
)
If you're looking to do high steer and relocated front hangers it's a wash whether you start with a solid axle truck or a IFS rig. There's a post down here from a couple years ago where Cory and I laid all the costs out. If you're leaving it stock... then the SFA is obviously the way to go.
I like the idea of starting with a 2wd truck... it's like you're contributing to the greater good of society by getting a 2wd off the road and adding a 4wd to the gene pool.

ok, i called about the 2 trucks one is about eight hours away and the other is in tulsa with a bad second gear.
i found a set of axles out of a 84 truck, with spring and rims for 300 bucks.
i am a new at this, so what is up with the spindles? i have been living over on pirate these last couple of days. so much to learn.
86-95 are the years to look for, because in 96 the 2.7 was used and the intake and exhaust are on the wrong side. right?
what would you guys do? wait on an 85, or SAS. just like the two trucks mentioned, they are so far away. i think i would have better luck doing a SAS.

Well, like Hans said, if your going to lift it, high steer it, etc... you'll wind up doing the same amount of work to an IFS truck or 2WD truck as you would to the 85. You'll end up putting new hangers on it and so on. Albiet with a SAS you will cut off a lot more than a factory SA truck. It just depends on what you want to start with. If you like the 90+ bodystyle better, get one of those and SAS it. All you'll need is a SAS kit and the axle. If you dont care about body style or get an 85 or 84 then you'll just need part of a SAS kit and an IFS steering box.
You can do a 96+ but you'll need a different axle than a toyota. Most use a waggy D44. 96+ the diff drop is to the drivers side which is the reason why you cant use the toy axle. The intake / exhaust sides are flipped but thats just because the diff drop... Also the 2.7 isnt a bad motor at all, nor is the 3.4.
Personally, I like the 90-95 ext cab pickup bodies and the 96-98 4Runner bodies, so if I were to start over, Id get one of them and just sas it. Now I have these new trucks and im really stoked about my 84, but I'm leaving it semi stock.... so a SA truck was definately the way to go. My 87 is going to go big, so it'll get SASd.

i am going to run 33's, so maybe a small lift if any. i think i will go and get the $300 set of axles this weekend and get that part done.
i like the 90-95 bodies myself. i think i will be easier to find one of those here in town, or closer than 7 hours away.
so what is the spindle deal? will i need special spindles?

The 2.7 isn't a big deal... check over on Marlin for how they're doing it as there are a lot of SAS's with Toy axles running the 2.7 on that board.
For 33's I'd just push the front axle forward and be done with it. You'll have to shorten up the drag link some, or maybe an adjustable one will let you adjust it shorter.
If you're going with a slight lift, check on Pirate for how to flip the drap link to the other side of the steering arm so they don't hit each other during driver side droop and snap the steering arm.
