WA DOL can't figure out what the FJ is.
Here is a curiosity;
A few days ago I thought I saw an FJ with truck plates and just dismissed it. My FJ has "car" plates so I thought I just miss-read them.
For those of you not in WA Truck plates are "A12345B" and cars get "123 ABC" type plates.
But today I saw another Ti-FJ with truck plates. Definatly the A12345B configuration. Interested to see how many have truck plates and how many have car plates.

It was Washingtons way of getting more money out of you when they used to go by weight. But I think now it's doesnt matter since registration is only $35 bucks "and increasing by the day while they make up new fees to charge us"! I was laughing my A$$ off when they told me to go to the gravel pit and weigh my truck when I first moved there.

I work for DOL. They are supposed to have passenger plates. There are a lot of old people that work for DOL who don't pay attention to the new cars that come out. I, however, am 22 (male). I'll fix your registrations for you.

And by the way, everyone pays for weight now. MOTORCYCLES which weigh no more than 600 pounds have to pay a weight fee. Everything under 4000 pounds pays $10. More than that pay $20...and up. Trucks pay by weight too, but not scale weight like cars. They go on gross weight. So most trucks pay $55 total for tags, and most cars pay $47.75. So you aren't losing THAT much money by having truck plates on FJs. If they licensed you to 4000 gross weight, which will show on your registration, you actually only pay $45. If it's 6000, you pay $55. So if you have 4000, you are actually SAVING money as compared to a car plate.
This is assuming that none of you live in King County of course. You pay excise tax on top of those fees if you live in it.

Truck.
"Truck" means every motor vehicle designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property.
WAC 308-96A-099 Use class descriptions.
(1) Why does the department assign use classes to vehicles?
The department assigns use classes to:
(a) Assess the proper license fees and taxes for vehicles;
(b) Assign special brands on subsequent owner's certificate of ownership;
(c) Apply certain restrictions on the use of the vehicles, which prints on the vehicle registrations;
(d) Assign the proper license plates.
(2) Under what authority does the department assign use classes to vehicles?
The department assigns use classes under the authority of RCW 46.16.040.
(3) What use classes does the department assign and when do they apply?
The use classes the department assigns are described below:
PAS PASSENGER Vehicle is used to transport passengers as defined in RCW 46.04.382. Typically passenger cars, utility or multipurpose vehicles, passenger vans, and private busses are licensed as passenger vehicles.
TRK TRUCK Vehicle is a personal use, light duty truck, with a declared gross weight of twelve thousand pounds or less. Trucks used for business or commercial purposes do not qualify for the TRK use class.
(7) When may truck license plates be assigned to my passenger vehicle?
Truck license plates may be assigned to your passenger vehicle whenever the vehicle is used to transport commodities, produce, freight or animals for commercial purposes. The use class would be COM instead of PAS. This would require a title application, a scale weight slip and a certified/notarized statement of use describing how the vehicle will be used commercially.
(8) When may passenger license plates be assigned to my pick-up truck?
Passenger license plates may only be assigned to your pick-up truck if it has been modified to qualify as a passenger vehicle. The department requires confirmation from the Washington state patrol that the vehicle has been modified to qualify for passenger use.
